Obama opens lead on McCain (Ohio)Updated at 9:44 PM
Source: Columbus Dispatch

Amid growing concerns about the economy, Ohio Democrats are coming home to Sen. Barack Obama, giving him a 7-point advantage in a new Dispatch Poll as the volatile presidential campaign swings into its final month.

The Illinois senator's lead of 49 percent to 42 percent over Republican Sen. John McCain comes at an especially opportune time for Obama because thousands of Ohioans already are casting ballots in the state's first presidential election allowing any registered voter to vote absentee. The new setup takes away some of the heft from the adage "the only poll that counts is the one on Election Day."

Ohio is even more critical to McCain's campaign this year since he pulled out of Michigan last week. Not only has no Republican ever won the presidency without carrying the Buckeye State, McCain almost has to run the 2004 electoral table to win, carrying every single state President Bush won four years ago, including Ohio.

9. Thank you from someone......
who was born and raised in Ohio and whose ancestors are probably rolling in their graves that Ohio would even consider not voting Democratic in this election.

Our new Sec. of State Jennifer Brunner is freaking wonderful.

Blackwell and his friends better pray that they don't wind up in jail.

4. Yes, Blackwell.
:eyes: Just one reason that our Ohio constituents have to whip out a drivers license while voting. Meanwhile, the man doesn't even question the intent of Diebold.

7. Do you have to ask?
They wrote that Iraq is a bloody hell hole with no bottom in sight in
2004 and then endorsed bush. Since 2004 they have been covering up
the theft of the election.

10. Interesting. That means that three percent of Ohioans . . .
. . . know that John McCain is unlikely to bring about the change this country needs, but plan to vote for him anyway.

13. This is great news
After the unreal and beyond belief wins by the Smirk and Snarl show, I am freaking uptight, anxious, and worried.

It means so much, so damn very much to get a Democrat in the White House. Having the risk this time of putting a temperamental, insane ancient cancer patient with a clueless trophy VP shadow in place of an administration hell bent to leather to ruin us and destroy the United States is like seeing a baby crawling across a busy hi way at night.

This country is in mortal danger, and a vote for Barack Obama and Joe Biden is the only way to provide for safety, security and a future for this country that will keep the American experiment alive well into this century.

Today elect real leaders, men who care; so the repairs and healing can begin. This democratically run republic is important, it is us, it is our children and their future, we cannot fail this election. We just cannot, there is just no wiggle room this time to fail.

17. Michigan fan says, "Yay, Ohio!"
I would normally say, "Oh, how I hate Ohio State." McCain gave up on Michigan in order to shift his resources to Ohio, and a few other places. Your strategery isn't working too well there, is it, John? Of course, this election, the Republicans aren't trying to confuse voters with anti-gay marriage referendums, are they?

RealClearPolitics.com, one of my new favorite websites, has 264 electoral votes solid or leaning for Obama. Ohio's 20 would put him to 284, 14 over the 270 required to win. McCain only has 163 solid or leaning. He'd have to win every single toss-up state. Not likely.

RCP shows Obama with a 3% lead in Florida. McCain cannot win without Florida.

Lastly, I saw an AP article that characterized the McCain campaign as "flailing." You know defeat is near when they start criticizing his campaigning.

19. yuck, some of the racist remarks at the bottom of the report
Tracy Clyburn, 42, a medical transcriptionist from Amelia, east of Cincinnati, said, "I don't feel that Barack is a 'true American.' I don't believe that Barack has as much concern for out country as does McCain. It seems like he is in it for the fame. I really don't feel he has the experience to lead our country."

Robert Neeley Sr., 73, of Fairfield in southwestern Ohio, retired from the U.S. Air Force, goes even further.

"He is anti-American and his disrespect to our flag and our Bible proves it. He is a Muslim because his name and his beliefs show it. He is for everything that a Christian is against.

"I don't believe that he was actually born in the U.S. He has a lot of bad baggage."
