BREAKING NEWS: Obama Accepts Bush Invitation To Meet In Washington
Source: WNBC

POSTED: 8:26 pm EDT September 24, 2008

WASHINGTON -- With extraordinary stakes on the line, President Bush has invited both presidential candidates and the leaders of the House and Senate to the White House on Thursday in hopes of securing a bill to rescue the economy.

Bush took the unusual step Wednesday night of calling Democratic Sen. Barack Obama directly to invite him to the meeting, White House press secretary Dana Perino said. An Obama spokesman said the senator would attend. The White House has also invited Republican Sen. John McCain.

Perino said the goal of the session is to make progress -- fast -- on a bipartisan solution to the biggest economic crisis in decades.

She said the call between Bush and Obama lasted several minutes and was "a good conversation."

6. On the contrary,
John McCain pulls his stunt, and Obama balks. George Bush calls a meeting, and Obama attends. What's the message? There are three.

1. John McCain is not the President, regardless of what his showboating suggests.
2. I'm willing to cooperate and work toward a solution.
3. My insight and my presence make a difference, unlike McCain's throwing his weight around.

That will be where Barack hears all the recordings of his private convos for the last couple years. McCain and Bush will try to bully him. It's going to be like meeting the Boss on the Sopranos.

25. Obama has surrounded himself with
very good people. People with experience and knowledge with great insight. Have faith. He's smart and knows their game. He is strong and above their antics. They are ganging up on him, getting him on their turf with all their friends there to help, but Obama is savvy and experienced. He has worked his way up and seen it all. A bully is a bully on the school playground or in the White House. He has gotten this far because he knows how to handle these situations. He is a man of vision, is incredibly strategic and will not be rushed into a decision. That's why so many support him.

21. Just a question.
Will this meeting be a one-day affair? I haven't seen any indication as to whether or not Friday's debate is still on. I agree with Obama's statement earlier that Americans need this debate more than ever, to hear the candidates' positions on the financial crisis. I hope that a presidential candidate debate takes place soon.

28. This is PERFECT for Obama.
Bush has completely undercut McCain with this. Obama goes to Washington, hammers out a deal on Thursday and can debate on Friday. By responding to Bush he hasn't caved to McCain's demand, he is responding to the President, and even better he has responded to a Republican President. This undercuts McCain saying that Obama has "never reached across the aisle."

This says two things to me, the economic situation is even more dire than we have been led to believe (the treasury department are saying we can't afford to play politics here, get this done) and there is very little love lost between Bush and McCain.

The end result is that McCain's ploy to postpone the debate is foiled, an economic deal is hammered out and Obama can say that he reached across the aisle to a Republican President in a time of crisis to get the job done.

31. I agree that meeting w/Bush is a good ideal for all of those reasons BUT...
UNLESS he can convince Bush to work out a deal in which the repugs and sign on too then it's better not to sign on to anything at all. A hard thing to achieve since it looks like the repugs are not distancing themselves from Bush's agreement. But are using this to distance themselves against Bush himself and blame it on the dems.
