Obama campaign cries foul after Republicans block Iran divestment bill
Source: Haaretz

Barack Obama's presidential campaign on Friday criticized Republican resistance to the Iran divestment provision authored by the Illinois senator, saying it would have been able to significantly set back the Islamic Republic's nuclear weapons program, and blaming partisan politics for the bill's failure.

"Once again, Senator McCain and his Republican allies put partisanship ahead of our national security and the security of our ally Israel," the Obama campaign said, after the bill was voted down by Senate Republicans on Friday. Some predicted the Republicans would scuttle the passage of the bill, in order to prevent Obama from achieving a prominent legislative victory while he and McCain are locked in a close presidential race.

Senator Dick Durbin (D-IL) held a conference call interview later on Friday, saying "Senator Obama's commitment to prevent Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons is firm and I'm sorry his important legislation was stopped."

6. Fascinating! What an interesting first post on DU. I look forward to more on how Obama = McCain
Welcome to DU. I look forward to hearing from you about how Obama is exactly the same as McCain and Bush!

Because so far your argument and concern is not too convincing.

8. Look, I think it is fair, although a bit aggressive
Aren't we sick of hearing who is a danger to us and who we must act against? What if Obama is using the public's perception of Iran as a threat as a political ploy? Is that not a fair question to ask. Look, thats politics.

People use the public's perception and pander to it, or express concern for important issues to the populace, to get elected. That is the name of the game.

Yes, its aggressive equating his view on Iran to McCain's. But undoubtedly he is asserting they are a threat to our national interest with this bill, right?

11. I think it's all about setting and controlling the agenda.
The Repugs have convinced a lot of people that Iran is some sort of rogue state that must be dealt with.

McCain's answer is to bomb bomb bomb, bomb bomb Iran.

Putting Obama's bill in place could have potentially parked Iran until after the election.

12. It also focuses on sanctions and supporting the UN
From the bill:

On December 23, 2006, the United Nations Security Council unanimously approved Resolution 1737, which bans the supply of nuclear technology and equipment to Iran and freezes the assets of certain organizations and individuals involved in Iran's nuclear program, until Iran suspends its enrichment of uranium, as verified by the International Atomic Energy Agency.

Following Iran's failure to comply with Resolution 1737, on March 24, 2007, the United Nations Security Council unanimously approved Resolution 1747, to tighten sanctions on Iran, imposing a ban on arms sales and expanding the freeze on assets, in response to the country's uranium-enrichment activities.

10. [Subject] StateDemocracy.org Equips You for the 2008 Elections

Dear Citizen:
Are you ready yet for the November 4th Elections? How about your friends, family, and neighbors?
More Americans are expected to vote this year than ever before in history, so don’t be left out! Be sure to ask everyone you know the following questions:
 Are you registered to vote? If you moved recently, have you updated your voter registration?
 Did you apply for an Absentee Ballot? Do you know your state may not require any reason?
 Can you find your local Polling Place? Do you know it may have changed from last time?
The answers to these questions -- and all your voting needs -- can be found at www.StateDemocracy.org -- the FREE 1-Stop citizen empowerment portal that Delivers Democracy to your Desktop! StateDemocracy is among the Internet’s first (since 2001) and most encompassing civic empowerment tools.
In order to boost voter participation this year, StateDemocracy.org is offering FREE widgets for all 50 states. You can simply download and embed these widgets into your own website so your visitors can register to vote, get an absentee ballot or find their local polling place.
Lobby Congress Via StateDemocracy
StateDemocracy.org also equips you to maintain an active dialog with your state and federal lawmakers once they are elected. And RIGHT NOW is an especially opportune time to contact your U.S. Senators and House Member, as Congress takes up major legislation on such issues as offshore oil drilling, another economic stimulus package and all federal appropriations bills over the next few weeks.
As you lobby your elected officials, remember that lawmakers view your constituent input as reflective of scores of other citizens who felt similarly, but didn’t have (or take) the time to share their opinions.
