Saudi cleric wants death for TV "sorcerers"
Source: Reuters

RIYADH, Sept 14 (Reuters) - A senior Saudi cleric has said purveyors of horoscopes on Arab television should face the death penalty, a paper said on Sunday, days after another cleric argued death for TV owners.

"Sorcerers who appear on satellite channels who are proven to be sorcerers have committed a great crime ... and the Muslim consensus is that the apostate's punishment is death by the sword," Sheikh Saleh al-Fozan told al-Madina daily.

"Those who call in to these shows should not be accorded Muslim rites when they die," the prominent cleric added.

<snip>

In their capacity as judges, clerics of Saudi Arabia's austere form of Islam often sentence "sorcerers" to death.

1. I was sure Mr Wizard died of natural causes....
Now I'm not so sure.

I'm kinda surprised that this senior cleric even has a satellite tv.
Then again Falwell had a network.

2. Oh gosh, another thorny moral dilemma.
Edited on Sun Sep-14-08 05:59 AM by Kutjara
While the Imam's comments are hideously intolerant and medieval, the idea of putting all purveyors of astrological hooey to the sword has a certain appeal. What to think, what to think. Hmmm.

21. It only has a "certain kind of appeal" to douchebags.
Much like cracking jokes about putting the Craftsman tool segment of the skeptic population to the sword would not be funny. Because, you know, shit like that has actually happened.

5. Seems the death penalty is a one size fits all type of punishment in
Saudi Arabia.

Here we only use it for murderers and powerless mentally deficient Texans (and innocent people who happen to be falsely accused). The Dancing supremes wouldn't let us use it on child rapists. See how much more advanced and socially aware we Americans are.

8. A few years ago, a teacher in Florida was suspended for
"sorcery" in the classroom by the religious right school board.

He had been doing some sleight-of-hand stage "magic" tricks.

Don't recall how it turned out, but these "christians" who suspended him at least did not kill him.

WASHINGTON - Sheik Saleh Al Luhaidan, seen in video seated to the right of the crown prince, is chief justice of Saudi Arabia's Supreme Judicial Council. His sermons and words carry great significance.

In an audiotape secretly recorded at a government mosque last October and obtained by NBC News, Luhaidan encourages young Saudis to go to Iraq to wage war against Americans.

but they don't call it astrology in that part of the believing world. Can't argue it is held in high regard

many moslems have been told the Danish flag is offensive

now why would they say that?

And under the radar, they turn on their own minority sects in Pakistan and other places already talked about

31. Believe what you wish
then go read up on focus, creative visualization, power of positive thinking, etc. Even quantum physicists have admitted matter at that level is driven by conscious thought.

I bet you don't believe in telepathy either, eh? The Army sure does:

Wahabi Islam. Dealth penalties. Chop off limbs. Stoning for adultery.

But maybe Palin's Wahabi Christians won't want to stone Johnny to death for his adultery. Maybe if he repents and is baptised into their church he can be saved?
