Gustav wasn't as severe, but impacted more of Louisiana than Katrina

NEW ORLEANS — While not as severe as Hurricane Katrina, Hurricane Gustav affected a much larger swath of Louisiana and more people and property, data released Friday by a demographer shows.

"While Hurricane Katrina was far more powerful than Hurricane Gustav, its (Gustav's) impact was very significant," Rigamer told a teleconference Friday.

As a result, Rigamer said more of Louisiana's housing faced danger from Gustav with 50.3 percent located in an area with winds of greater than 74 percent — nearly double that of Katrina. Three-quarters of all of Louisiana's housing stock faced winds of at least 58 mph, compared with 43.9 percent for Katrina.

Rigamer said the study was designed to support applications from state and local governments for possible federal hurricane recovery assistance. He said the study had not been contracted by any government agency or company.

Jindal appeals to President Bush for federal disaster declaration

Jindal, who flew to the Ouachita Parish Emergency Operations Center in West Monroe late this afternoon, said that he was confident Bush would do so.
“It’s so important for the president to include all 64 parishes,” Jindal said. “That declaration is key to releasing federal funding to help with the recovery.”

He praised northeastern Louisiana cities, towns and individual families for sheltering many of the 1.9 million evacuees from southern Louisiana.

“I want to personally thank the people of northeastern Louisiana,” Jindal said. “They opened their homes to those evacuating and then got hit hard by the storm themselves. Not only did they continue to help the evacuees, but they also helped their neighbors.”

Yes, NO and the response after Katrina sucked majorly. I never made it down to Houma, but know people who went down there to do food kitchens for residents (community kitchen cooking).
