Archives of Alaska Papers Reveal Disturbing -- And Goofy -- Details from Palin's Past
Source: Editor & Publisher

NEW YORK The McCain team may not have vetted Sarah Palin with boots on the ground in Alaska, but the Democrats sure did -- two years ago when she ran for governor. The oppo-research, compiled in a 62-page document with countless summaries or direct quotes, largely from local newspapers, covers all of the important issues you would expect to see, from her views on abortion and abstinence to tangled oil pipeline questions.

*snip*

USED PUBLIC FUNDS FOR POLITICAL GAIN

In her 2002 Lt. Governor bid, Mayor Palin used city employees, telephones, computers, fax machines for campaign fundraising and literature. On her candidate registration form, she used her City Hall fax number, and her mayoral e-mail address. Records show that Wasilla city property was used to contact supporters, donors, media contacts, and media purchasing.

*snip*

GENDER CARD

Stambaugh Sued for Gender Discrimination After Palin Said She Was Intimidated by His Size. After Palin fired Irl Stambaugh, the police chief, he sued the city in part based on gender discrimination. The Frontiersman wrote, "The gender discrimination issues stem from statements Palin allegedly made to others that she was intimidated by Stambaugh's size. He stands over 6-feet tall and weighs more than 200 pounds, which, the lawsuit said, is attributed to his gender."

*snip*

LYING

Palin Exaggerated Work Experience for Mayoral Campaign. In 1997, Frontiersman columnist Paul Stuart wrote that after Palin had criticized her opponent for using City Hall resources for political gain, "when Palin was asked back then (by me) why the lodge where she claimed, in her campaign, to have gained her management experience, had no record of a borough business license or of paying any bed tax, she paused and said it might have been because the place had no clients for a year or so." In an article describing the possibility of recalling Palin, the Frontiersman wrote the "reasons include Palin's alleged falsification of her credentials during the campaign last fall."

Frontiersman Editorial Said Palin Made Statements That Were "Patently Untrue," Said She Had Shown "Unrepentant Backpedaling and Incessant Whining." A Frontiersman editorial wrote, "Wasilla residents have been subjected to attempts to unlawfully appoint council members, statements that have been shown to be patently untrue, unrepentant backpedaling, and incessant whining that her only enemies are the press and a few disgruntled supporters of former Mayor John Stein."

LOTS more, such as she was sued (in part) because "she was intimidated by Stambaugh's (the police chief she fired) size"
-- all the world leaders she would deal with better be midgets or this country could be in bigger trouble than anyone ever thought possible; difficult to conceptualize, I know!

60. She Was Intimidated by His Size
Seems unusual for a woman claiming to be intimidated by size and referring to height and weight. We did have a woman file discrimination charges against a "big" coworker that wore sweat pants to work without under garments, she claimed it offended her. If Palin were a democrat, the right would have wild time spinning stories about this one.

- Won't stop saying "Under God" until the phrase is "pulled from her cold, dead lips,";

- Presided over a wedding at Wal Mart;

- Thinks Ivana Trump is the height of culture and glamour;

- Enthusiastic supporter of the death penalty;

- Serial dissembler, given to exaggerating her credentials;

- "Doesn't Grasp the Truth," according to colleagues;

- Brother-in-law appeared on a reality show called "Looking for Love: Bachelorettes in Alaska."

My gosh, they've discovered the perfect GOP candidate.

edit: let me add, on a related note here:

Sarah Palin questions Sarah Palin's experience

Laura McGann of the Washington Independent has been skulking around Wasilla, Alaska, and committing some excellent journalism in the process. Here's one gem from her trawl through the archives of the local newspaper, the Mat-Su Valley Frontiersman. In an article in October 1996, the new mayor of Wasilla was asked about her plans to shake things up. How would she run the city without experienced leaders?

"It's not rocket science," Palin said. "It's $6 million and 53 employees."

Also, an amusing fact: Palin beat her rival in that mayoral election by 616 votes to 413.

20. WAL MART WEDDING FOR THE WIN!
Edited on Wed Sep-03-08 07:02 PM by d_b
He worked in the pets department. She was a cashier. A romance blossomed. And when it came time to say ''I do,'' they chose -- where else? -- an aisle next to menswear. Sandwiched between racks of cotton pants and surrounded by ''Back-to-School Specials'' signs, Jake McCowan and Rosalyn Ryan exchanged vows last week at the place where they met, work and fell in love: the Wasilla Wal-Mart. A crowd of 200, including passengers from a tour bus and several dozen curious shoppers, watched the two employees tie the knot in an afternoon ceremony officiated by Wasilla Mayor Sarah Palin. ''It was so sweet,'' said Palin, who fought back tears during the nuptials. "It was so Wasilla."

65. How could a politician officiate at a wedding?
She's not a licensed clergy member, nor is she a judge of any kind. You can be married by a J.P., county judge(not the guy who is head of the county commissioners court), district judge, Federal Judge, Appellate Judge. Basically any judge who sits in a court and hears cases, except for traffic court.

Judges generally have a law license. She did not go to law school.

Can any politican officiate at a wedding in Alaska? :shrug:

21. what is the primary reason to pick someone who has no experience?
so that you can tell them what to do because they don't know any better.

The same minions of bush and cheney are more than likely going to retain their jobs in the old man's administration--because he's going to need them to keep bush's juggernaut going.

Anyone else with any kind of experience would be harder to keep in line than would Palin.

She don't know what she doesn't know adn that is dangerous to our national security.

28. The real issue is that McCain has proven he has no business running anything let alone the country
What a horrible mistake. This woman, she's not even remotely prepared for the big-time, not even close. She's probably not prepared to be governor of Alaska, but at least she built support to validate her election. In the end, this is all McCain, he makes hasty, irrational, panicked and ill-conceived decisions. Again, do you really want John McCain to have nuclear weapons at his disposal? Do you really want him representing our country in any type of negotiations? He's ignorant and dangerous.

44. I don't mean anything about experience
It's judgment. Nobody really cares about experience when they believe the other person doesn't get "it." Most people don't care about Obama's experience or perceived lack of it, they care about what he brings to the table. And if you can make people think that John McCain is a disaster who can't even make a decent VP pick, that's a good thing. Obama picked up on this when he said "John McCain is a good man, he just doesn't get it."

The key is to show just why he doesn't get "it." Experience and issues really don't matter in elections. People will vote for the person who they think looks good and sounds like they know what they are talking about, and who they feel will look after their best interests. People who are strong Dems or strong Repubs will have certain litmus tests, but a lot of people really don't. If you notice during 2006, populist Dems whipped some ass, even on more experienced opponents. People like Jon Tester and Jim Webb beat career entrenched and cash rich Republicans in Red States, because people simply believed they would look out for their interests more. In the end, if people are comfortable with Obama's personality - it appears they are- plus they think he looks out for their interests, he'll win. It helps that it's a big Dem year like 2006 too.

50. Dontate Donate Donate
We need to donate. Lots of donations. This is the presidential election; we need to donate to Barack Obama. It's imperative. That's how we overcome the Palin factor. She's in for the long hall. She ain't leaving.

48. She has set women back another 20 years now...
because of this candidates will use this as an excuse not to run with women on their ticket again...and it'll be used as an excuse not to back women or contribute to their campainges..the only way will be for another woman to come up with her own money to run top ticket like Hillary...

She hasn't helped the woman's cause, she's hurt it...

54. Karl Rove had Alabama Dem Sec. of State taken down for what Palin got away with !!!
Part of the state wide attacks on Dems. included Repub. State Attorney General Troy King ( now up on charges against him for other things)
charging the Sec. of State Worley for campaigning for re-election using office stationary.
Worley was resisting the Alabama Voter ID push.

God, I hope she and her lawyers read this about Palin.

( Siegleman was on Democracy Now with Amy Goodman tonight, btw).

I am steaming mad at the moment...
