Fellow POW Questions McCain's Readiness In New Ad
Source: Huffington Post

One of John McCain's fellow prisoners of war is making an argument that few if any Democrats are willing to air publicly: the Senator's experience in Vietnam does not qualify him as president. In fact, it may be a reason to vote against him.

Phillip Butler, a Naval Academy graduate and decorated combat veteran who was imprisoned for eight years in the infamous "Hanoi Hilton," declares in a new political film that McCain's time as a POW makes him a medical and temperamental risk to be handed the responsibilities of commander-in-chief.

"I think I can say with authority that the prisoner of war experience is not a good prerequisite for President," says Butler. "John McCain is not somebody I would like to see with his finger near the red button."

He only goes on from there. "He was very sensitive and touchy and just easy to anger," Butler says of the Arizona Republican. "John McCain's temperament makes it clear that he is not cut out to be President of the United States."

The commentary comes in a short interview that Butler conducted with Brave New PAC, a progressive group that has produced some of the sharpest and most aggressive critiques of McCain, and whose videos are often among the most viewed on sites like YouTube.

A Brave New PAC spokesman said Monday that the group is buying national advertising time to air a shortened version of the video. Below is the full cut:

9. Treatment changed in Fall of 1969
McCain wasn't released until March, 1973. By his silence, he accepts "torture credit" for 5 1/2 years, but it was more like 2. Still not pleasant, but not the same either.

13. Says McCain was "very apathetic about religion"
Edited on Tue Sep-02-08 01:28 AM by boreDem
Phillip Butler: "It has been very disappointing to watch him pander to his various political bases and change his stances on things. For example, even his stance on religion. I knew him many years ago and John was very apathetic about religion. And now, all of a sudden, he's become an evangelical to bring in that base."

Interesting that in his Cross in the Dirt story, which he has suddenly remembered, McCain presents himself as a devoted Christian, inspired by the cross.
