Barack Obama's image suffers under John McCain attacks, poll finds


The presidential race remains tight, with respondents to a Times/Bloomberg poll choosing Obama by 45% to McCain's 43%, a statistical dead heat. Obama's race remains an issue with many voters.

Barack Obama's public image has eroded this summer amid a daily onslaught of attacks from Republican rival John McCain, leaving the race for the White House statistically tied, according to a Los Angeles Times/Bloomberg poll released today.

Far more voters say McCain has the right experience to be president, the poll found. More than a third have questions about Obama's patriotism.

any astute campaign watching the Hillary strength in the primaries would figure out as the very best tack to keep their guy in there against Obama. The same intractable parity- whatever the different situation it might be this time- is the major threat to the Obama campaign. On this great hinge swings the massive desire of the public for something better than the old versus the powerful engineered distractions that might move McCain within striking distance at least for cheating. The primary was indeed a mini-model for the main campaign now even with the Penn machinations and the willingness to bend the rules.

The taunt will always be that Obama can't get a bad man down. Not being an expert and not having any way of knowing how Obama could have "put Hillary away" or McCain I offer no advice. I only note that there is less reason for caution now since the entire electorate is engaged and the party united( a little detail ignored by very many!). Simply pitching for pennies among the 2% non polarized swing voters is a recipe to concede McCain the unearned parity strategies. There IS a huge majority to win(one that Kerry was starting to get in spite of all) out there. Not to go for it with intelligence and passion is to betray the electorate's political desires.

Unfortunately there are far too many stupid people out there.

McCain is a dumb ass. But if 100 is an average IQ and if McCain has an IQ of 100, then he is smarter than half the country. There are plently of people out there who probably think McCain is smarter than they are and they are probably right.

But average isn't good enough IMHO. I want my president to be the smartest guy in the room. I would like him to be smarter than I am. Obama is. McCain doesn't even come close.

If he can't mar his image by going after McBush, someone else absolutely has to. If we continue to play "let's make nice" with the Republicans, they will win. Pure and simple. The American public, generally speaking, cares more about American Idol than who the American president is. Sad, but true. If they manage to vote, their criteria will be what gets their attention for a second on a television ad. Republicans are reverting to the "we will keep you safe" load of baloney in the above board ads and the "scary black man" in some of the others. Someone, somehow, has to point out McCain's lack of mental fitness for the job, otherwise we're going to end up with a president even worse than Bush.
