Jackson Browne Sues McCain Camp
Source: The Huffington Post

Singer, songwriter, liberal activist and now John McCain scourge Jackson Browne filed a lawsuit today against the presumptive GOP nominee and the Republican Party for failing to obtain a license to use one of his songs in a television commercial.

The song, "Running on Empty," has been used by the Republican Party apparently against Browne's approval. The music icon also claims that in doing so, the false perception is created that he is endorsing McCain's candidacy.

If the whole episode strikes a nostalgic tone, it's because famous musical artists and Republican presidential candidates have butted heads in the past. Bruce Springsteen publicly complained when Ronald Reagan used "Born in the U.S.A" during his campaign in 1984.

The commercial Browne is upset by is a recent spot on energy policy that rips Barack Obama for suggesting that the country conserve gas through proper tire inflation.

And I think he tried to use "Born in the U.S.A."(although who ever suggested that one to him didn't listen to the verses of the song)

And Number 41 did it to Bobby McFerrin with "Don't Worry, Be Happy"(although that song was getting annoying by then anyway.)

They didn't care about the versus. Same thing with the right and "Born in the U.S.A."

That's what I thought about Brittney and Paris. They may be celebrities but McNutts doesn't have the right to use their image in a campaign commercial without paying them. This isn't a newspaper or tabloid. Let's encourage them to sue him too. Hey! John Edwards needs a job. They can call him.

And we're a small church in a small town. No one would know if we did violate copyrights and licenses. But we don't. "Why is that?", you ask? Well, two reasons: it's the law; and it's the right thing to do. Which of these does McCain not understand?

the others are: one Liberal and one Libertarian.

They HATE each other. they tour with THREE separate sound systems with THREE separate mixing boards- one for drums, bass and guitar.... three touring rigs and light shows. three stage entrances that guarantee they never cross paths. three complete sound-checks are done and none of the other two are allowed in the building while one check is happening...

and most of the live music is pre-recorded.

they HATE each other.

I'm not a huge fan of theirs, liked the old stuff. Anyhow, I noticed Biden in your sig line, and last night on countdown they seem to think he's getting tapped for the VP job. I certainly hope they're right, I think he is a great guy. I hope he's careful with what he says until after the election, but then I hope he speaks his mind, I think he has a lot of great opinions and ideas that need to be heard. I was a little disappointed when KO mentioned his plagiarism thing, but didn't mention McInsanes little Wikipedia plagiarism thing from last week. Anyhow, thanks for the ZZ info, and I hope your man gets the nod, that'll hopefully kill at least some of the lack of experience crap.

"LAWYERS IN LOVE"

by Jackson Browne

I can't keep up with what's been going on
I think my heart must just be slowing down
Among the human beings in their designer jeans
Am I the only one who hears the screams
And the strangled cries of lawyers in love

God sends his spaceships to America, the beautiful
They land at six o'clock and there we are, the dutiful
Eating from TV trays, tuned into to Happy Days
Waiting for World War III while Jesus slaves
To the mating calls of lawyers in love

Last night I watched the news from Washington, the capitol
The Russians escaped while we weren't watching them, like Russians do
Now we've got all this room, we've even got the moon
And I hear the U.S.S.R. will be open soon
As vacation land for lawyers in love
============================================================================================

It's all in there---Neocons, Low-Info citizens, Religious Right, etc

What a frikkin' BRILLIANT SONG!!!!!!!!!!
:)

all these years later, isn't it?

I eagerly await the day that we old farts fondly remember it as history, not current events.

I'm so happy to see Jackson Browne and Mike Myers (and Warner Music) taking back what is rightfully theirs. It's high time these Repukes had to pay the piper.

Better to ask for forgiveness than to ask for permission... wait, they don't ask for forgiveness either, just f'off if you don't like it. Yes, stealing is such a nice family value to hand down to our young. :sarcasm:

69. ASCAP should prohibit the GOP from ANY music
In my opinion, the American Society of Composers, Authors, and Publishers (ASCAP, http://www.ascap.com /) should put a blanket denial against ANY republican request to license their music at any events, while allowing the Democratic Party carte blanche at playing whatever song they want. Of course, many artists whom are part of the felonious GOP may gripe, but overall it would add a TREMENDOUS amount of spirit and goodwill amongst GOP-caused economic depression in the music community.

I hope the Democratic Party uses the song a LOT and rub the noses of the GOP in the excrement they produced for themselves.

It seems like no one will hold these devious b*stards accountable for anything they do. It may not be impeachment, but any little stand we make is important. Anyway, how dare those soulless b*stards who long ago sold their soul to the Oil Demons use music that is so soulful.

75. So What?
It was still used without Jackson's permission.

Ive been waiting for something to happen
For a week or a month or a year
With the blood in the ink of the headlines
And the sound of the crowd in my ear
You might ask what it takes to remember
When you know that youve seen it before
Where a government lies to a people
And a country is drifting to war

And theres a shadow on the faces
Of the men who send the guns
To the wars that are fought in places
Where their business interest runs

On the radio talk shows and the t.v.
You hear one thing again and again
How the u.s.a. stands for freedom
And we come to the aid of a friend
But who are the ones that we call our friends--
These governments killing their own?
Or the people who finally cant take any more
And they pick up a gun or a brick or a stone
There are lives in the balance
There are people under fire
There are children at the cannons
And there is blood on the wire

Theres a shadow on the faces
Of the men who fan the flames
Of the wars that are fought in places
Where we cant even say the names

They sell us the president the same way
They sell us our clothes and our cars
They sell us every thing from youth to religion
The same time they sell us our wars
I want to know who the men in the shadows are
I want to hear somebody asking them why
They can be counted on to tell us who our enemies are
But theyre never the ones to fight or to die
And there are lives in the balance
There are people under fire
There are children at the cannons
And there is blood on the wire

115. You misunderstand - or I was not clear. Sorry. I totally agree with never letting
any puke use any piece of music or a single image that is owned by a creative liberal. Let them rely on the few sell-outs with a minimum of talent who join their little "we are persecuted (whine)" social club. http://www.newscorpse.com/ncWP/?p=1008

I was just commenting on the many who ripped on their campaign for picking Running on Empty as a theme song for their candidate. They are so stupid that they would ONLY look at the title or signature line in a song to determine whether to use (usurp) it. So, the title itself would be all they examined and therefore, they used it in a critique of Obama, not an endorsement of McInsane.

Likewise, I get a kick (while also being furious with) Insanity using the anti-wife-abuse anthem “Independence Day” by Martina McBride on his radio hate-fest (at least he was in the past when I used to punish myself by listening to a few minutes of it).

From Wiki: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Independence_Day_ (song)
The lyrics tell a story of a woman's response to domestic abuse, seen from the point of view of her daughter (Martina in the song). The song's music video was somewhat controversial at the time of its release, because of its graphic depiction of domestic violence.
The lyrics have a double meaning in that the woman in the story is finally gaining her "freedom" from her abusive husband. Thus, it is her Independence Day. The title also refers to the fact that the events noted in the song happened on America's Independence Day, or July 4.

The idiot would know that if he only listened to the lyrics, instead of just having someone read the title to him.

78. Good for Jackson!
I can't believe the repuke party wouldn't be aware of Jackson's politics - he's got to be on their radar, he's ALWAYS been outspoken, and active in politics. This time around he donated the max to Obama, and campaigned for Edwards.

I really hope he pursues this and wins - maybe he can offer them "Lives in the Balance" instead - it would be much more appropriate, particularly the video.

Jackson is part of the reason I began to get interested in politics, and helped open my eyes to what was going on in the world around me. I'm anxiously awaiting the release of his first studio album of all new songs, which is being released late September. It's been way too long!

82. We have similar tastes my friend.
I've been a fan of Jackson's since around 1973, and now my DAUGHTER is a fan - I love John Prine, too. I'm pretty sure "Lives in the Balance" is from 1986 (Iran/Contra), but Jackson posted the new video for the song a year or so ago. It gives me chills everytime I see it. I have no doubt Jackson would have no problem with Obama using his work - I also have no doubt Obama would be smart enough to ASK first!

80. Republicans are idiots

Using "Born In the USA" and "Pink Houses", both neither one complimentary of the way the USA functioned. Pink Houses, like much of Mellencamps work sounds poppy and has some positive vibes, but is cutting and critical. Repukes need to stick with country music, rock music is too complicated for their pea brains.

87. Good for Jackson Browne
I adore his music. I'm stunned anyone from McC's camp or the Rep party would be stupid enough to try to use one of his songs and expect no repercussions. I'm not surprised they didn't bother to ask; I'm sure they realized he would turn them down, so they just took it and hoped to get away with it. Idiots. The man is an activist. Hello. He will bother to slap you for stealing his work.

It amazes me to this day that Reagan's campaign wanted to use Born in the USA. Apparently these are people who never bother to listen to the words of the songs they try to steal. :eyes:

Careful, guys. There are other people on the planet who pay attention beyond the words to the chorus. You keep bringing these 'lefty' songs into the limelight, and those people might start hearing and thinking about the lyrics you so like to ignore...

96. For America
The thing I wonder about the Dads and Moms
Who send their sons to the Vietnams
Will they really think their way of life
Has been protected as the next war comes?
I have prayed for America
I was made for America
Her shining dream plays in my mind
By the rockets' red glare
A generation's blank stare
We better wake her up this time

The kid I was when I first left home
Was looking for his freedom and a life of his own
But the freedom that he found wasn't quite as sweet
When the truth was known
I have prayed for America
I was made for America
I can't let go till she comes around
Until the land of the free
Is awake and can see
And until her conscience has been found

Sleep with one eye open
Gripping your pillow tight

Exit light
Enter night
Take my hand
Off to never never land

Somethings wrong, shut the light
Heavy thoughts tonight
And they arent of snow white

Dreams of war, dreams of liars
Dreams of dragons fire
And of things that will bite

Sleep with one eye open
Gripping your pillow tight

Exit light
Enter night
Take my hand
Off to never never land....

Hush little baby, dont say a word
And never mind that noise you heard
Its just the beast under your bed,
In your closet, in your head

Exit light
Enter night
Grain of sand

Exit light
Enter night
Take my hand
Were off to never never land

I don't care if it hurts
I want to have control
I want a perfect body
I want a perfect soul

But I'm a creep
I'm a weirdo

112. Mike Myers also threatened to sue....WTF don't the McCains get about "copyright?"
http://www.cbsnews.com/blogs/2008/08/12/politics/horser...

A small but amusing note from the McCain campaign, via Ben Smith: Turns out Mike Myers isn't on board with the McCain camp's use of his Wayne's World persona in its recent anti-Obama video, "Fan Club."

Writes McCain's Michael Goldfarb: "The ad features kids talking about how 'dreamy' Senator Obama is, how he brought a crowd to Taco Bell despite inclement weather, and how he is no less of an international superstar than U2 frontman Bono. Unfortunately, the final clip of Mike Myers and Dana Carvey doing their 'we're not worthy' bit from Wayne's World has spurred a celebrity backlash. Myers had his people call the campaign to demand that the video be removed from YouTube for copyright violation. Apparently, we are not, in fact, worthy."

Goldfarb uses Myers' response to play into the McCain campaign's portrayal of Obama as a celebrity. He writes that the reaction represents an example of "Obama's celebrity friends" fighting back on the candidate's behalf.
----------------
http://blogs.wsj.com/washwire/2008/08/12/mccain-ad-fail... /

According to the McCain campaign’s blog, Myers had his people call McCain’s people to take down the ad with threats of legal action. It worked–it’s not available on YouTube anymore.

“Unfortunately, the final clip of Mike Myers and Dana Carvey doing their ‘we’re not worthy’ bit from Wayne’s World has spurred a celebrity backlash,” Michael Goldfarb posted on the blog this afternoon. “Myers had his people call the campaign to demand that the video be removed from YouTube for copyright violation. Apparently, we are not, in fact, worthy.”

UPDATE: a version of the “Fan Club” ad is still available on McCain’s Web site, but the “Wayne’s World” clip has been edited out.
