Bush tells Russia to reverse course in Georgia

WASHINGTON, Aug 11 (Reuters) - U.S. President George W. Bush told Russia on Monday to end its military action in Georgia, calling Moscow's push into the smaller country an unacceptable invasion of a sovereign state.

"Russia has invaded a sovereign neighboring state and threatens a democratic government elected by its people. Such an action is unacceptable in the 21st century," Bush said.

"There is evidence that Russian forces may soon begin bombing the civilian airport in the capital city. If these reports are accurate, these Russian actions would represent a dramatic and brutal escalation of the conflict in Georgia," he told reporters at the White House after returning from China. Bush tells Russia to reverse course in Georgia

11 Aug 2008 22:01:51 GMT
WASHINGTON, Aug 11 (Reuters) - U.S. President George W. Bush pressed Russia on Monday to end its military action in Georgia, warning a "dramatic and brutal escalation" of Moscow's push into the smaller country would jeopardize its relations with the West.

Bush said it appeared Moscow was trying to overthrow the elected government of Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili, a close U.S. ally.

"Russia has invaded a sovereign neighboring state and threatens a democratic government elected by its people. Such an action is unacceptable in the 21st century," Bush told reporters at the White House.

The crisis began Thursday when Georgia sent forces to retake South Ossetia, a pro-Russian area that broke from Georgia in the 1990s. Moscow, which supports South Ossetia's independence, responded by sending its troops into Georgia.

Bush cited reports that Russian troops had moved beyond the separatist areas and into Georgia proper.

2. Bush doesn't agree with invading neighboring states
It is much better if the state is on a different continent. It's more sporting that way.

He is such an idiot. "Do what I say, not as I do". Putin's got to jumping with joy to now have free access to the Iranian border in case we attack Iran.

War is Profit.

6. How does OUR warmonger think HE can tell another leader NOT
TO DO damn near the same thing HE DID? No Iraq wasn't a neighboring state to the US, but it was a soverign state, and crooked or not, their leader WAS elected by their people! He doesn't have any leg to stand on with the argument of "fixed elections" either'! So were ours!

I don't agree with Russia invading another land any more than I agreed with Shrub doing so!

Another "Don't do as I do, but DO as I say!

8. Big difference between Putin is Bush...
Bush will be gone in less than 3 months and I don't believe he'll be anywhere close to the presidency after that. Putin isn't going anywhere unless he is carried out feet first. Another thing, although I think we should set Iraq on the right course and hightail it out of there, I truly don't believe that we will occupy that country forever. I believe it will end up more like a Germany/Japan situation. Georgia is going to be part of Russia for keeps whether they want it or not.

12. I bet under his breath Putin said...
f*** off to Bush. I guess the lovefest between them is over now. Bush has absolutely no credibility in the world any more. No one pays any attention to what he says. Why doesn't he save his breath?

13. My gut tells me to sympathize with Russia.
Georgia has been an outpost of Western imperialism in the region. That said, I hope that a solution can be found that is peaceful and respects sovereign national borders.

21. I am not endorsing Russian imperialism.
Russia was certainly an imperialist power at various times. I do not think that Georgia should lose its sovereignty. Not at all. However, at the same time, Russia taking actions to ensure a regional balance of power between it and the West is a factor for stability and peace.

23. He doesn't have a whole lot of armed forces available to do it,
which may be a good thing.

If we get involved, it won't be in a big, obvious way. Georgie's guys may remember how we helped get the Rooskies out of Afghanistan without setting off WWIII.

We also could give money and help to any volunteers from Ukraine, Poland, Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia. They are tremendously upset, and I for one can understand why. The Rooskies might be pissed, but it will be more difficult to actually attack those countries. We and the W. Europeans, hopefully, would be responsible for getting fuel to any countries that Russia would cut off.

We are now offering humanitarian aid, and some of it may actually be humanitarian.

29. Really
We can keep Europe warm this winter by helping getting fuel to them? Do you have any idea of how hard it will be just to keep our northeast warm this winter? Russia owns Europe and there is not a dam thing we can do about it. And thank god Putin is not Stalin.

20. Russia has more right
Russia has more right in their actions than Bush and his boys have invading
Iraq.
Bush has no earthly or Moral right,to tell Russia what to do.
Bush and the neocons has no plan to ever leave Iraq even, even if they ask us to leave like now.
They want a timeline,Bush will NEVER give that.
He did not Invade Iraq to turn around and leave.
Bush Cheney, and Boys, beleive in US Imperialism, that we are boss of the world, and have the right to Dictate,Bully,Pressure,Threaten, and Bomb, anyone and everyone, anywhere, who do not see things our way.

Those days are past and over.It is a different ball game today.
Bush and boys are living in the past,Those Glory days when overwhelming military ruled are long gone just like the Cowboy days

Both a sad state of affairs that do not compliment progressive politics :( . Sovereign nations status should be undisputed. Iraq is the ultimate quagmire but I see this as just as terrible in the motives for both sides.
