Lieberman ‘on McCain VP short-list’; Being vetted, according to McCain adviser
Source: Financial Times

Joe Lieberman, the former Democratic vice-presidential nominee who has endorsed John McCain, is being vetted as a potential running mate for the Republican presidential hopeful, according to an adviser to Mr McCain’s campaign. Mr Lieberman, who has campaigned for the Arizona senator, has long been considered an unconventional but plausible choice for Mr McCain.

Although Democrats have rejected Mr McCain’s image as a maverick politician, Mr Lieberman’s support for the presumptive Republican nominee has, much to the chagrin of his former colleagues, helped to boost Mr McCain’s reputation as a bi-partisan legislator with friends on both sides of the aisle. Mr Lieberman, a staunch supporter of Israel, could also help Mr McCain win over Jewish voters.

“McCain loves Lieberman. And he is on the short-list because Lieberman has never embarrassed anyone, never misspoken. The first rule is, don’t take someone who costs you votes,” said one McCain adviser.

But not everyone would be enthusiastic about Mr Lieberman being added to the ticket. While Mr Lieberman has staunchly defended Mr McCain’s support of the surge, the escalation of US troops in Iraq, and the lawmakers have teamed up on legislative proposals to combat global warming, the registered independent is aligned with Democrats on most other issues. “Conservatives would be pissed as hell – I think you would have a revolt, but sometimes John does what John wants to do,” the McCain adviser said....

"Jewish voter" crap. It is really insulting.

Lieberman is not popular among Jewish voters. The majority of Jews are democrats. And a lot of Jews that I know think Lieberman is a sanctimonious asshole. McCain will get the same neocon Likudnik votes with him or without him.

folks were GOP! Go figure. And yes most admire Joe. We have had some candidates of the Jewish faith who have had difficulty with talking to the folks in their synagogues. That being said , I think this whole article is hogwash. Ain't gonna happen. Lieberman is too busy donating funds to the DSCC to save his committee appointments and it sure looks like he will.

12. Well I think Obama needs to offer Lieberman the VP slot.
Before you flame me hear me out, the VP usually has little power so having Lieberman as VP probably wont cause any problems or atleast not many plus it gives the democrats a strong near bullet proof VP candidate.
The republicans dont dare attack him since they have been supporting him pretty openly in order to drive a wedge between him and the democrats plus it might bring in more of the moderate voters.
The other benefit is if he accepts and Obama wins it opens up for a democrat to take Liebermans seat so its win win for the democrats.

32. Even better, the Dems should replace Obama with Cheney at the convention.
That'd be an even more foolproof strategy -- the Republicans dare not attack him and it'll also bring out the Republican base to vote Dem! With Lieberman filling out the Democratic Cheney/Lieberman ticket, the Dems could breeze thru' the next 8 years. And it'd sure put an end to those pro-impeachment rabble rousers.

Anyway I was not joking, assuming Lieberman were to accept it would be a very difficult ticket for the republicans to counter atm, Lieberman also for the most part agrees with the democrats except on Iraq but he would not have much if any say in policy for that, Obama would be the main one to set that.
Plus like I said it opens up Liebermans seat for another democrat to perhaps take it which is an extra bonus assuming Obama would win.

58. A Couple of Problems
A - Lieberman has made quite clear he supports McCain for president, so there is no way he would accept a position as Obama's running mate

B - If Lieberman does get to be VP and vacates his Senate seat, the governor of Lieberman's state would appoint his replacement. The current governor of Connecticut is a Republican.

74. Yeah I know but that was in the primaries this is
the general election so maybe he will see reason, doubtful of course but hey everyone at one time also said it was impossible for man to fly.
As for appointing a republican, its a risk I'll grant you but what are the rules for that state in regards to the appointment? Is it for the full term or just until an election can be held in X amount of time?
If its full term it might suck for a bit but hopefully the democrats can win against any republican and besides its Lieberman......not much of a change in the short term hehe
I just happen to think that if Obama could talk him (Lieberman) into it would really deflate the McCain campaign even more and raise the chances of Obama further in stomping all over his (McCain) ass.

I know Democrats who voted for Bush instead of Gore simply because Lieberman was on the ticket. Let McCain have him.

The problem is if McCain gets elected with Lieberman as VP, I think we'll see an unfortunate illness or unexpected death that puts Lieberman in the #1 spot. This seems to me like a neocon idea, ever since I saw Joe whispering in McCain's ear. Very creepy guy.

43. I was thinking the same thing
Being from CT (and being a Lamont supporter) I used to see this guy "Dolstein" who always defended Holy Joe, washed his feet, etc., etc.

Haven't seen much from him lately.

I always thought maybe Dolstein was actually Joe himself!

Tut-tut

18. I don't believe it. It will be Gov. Sarah Palin or Gov. Bobby Jindal.
He needs some media attention in the campaign and either those two will cause a total media frenzy. They will go completely berserk over Palin, a former Miss Alaska.

35. He can't choose somebody that young, or he'll draw more attention to his age and health
And he doesn't need any connection to Alaska or Louisiana politics right now, as the latter is notoriously corrupt and pretty much everybody involved in the former is currently indicted or a person of interest.

Also, Jindal is a whackjob.

26. They're probably putting this out to gauge the reaction. I can't see this drawing Independent votes
which is what they need, I think. And while Lieberman is popular among Repubs, and one "on the other side" that is not as disgusting as the rest, I don't know that they would like one of "them" being on the ticket (altho Lieberman is now an Independent himself).

To many conservatives, Lieberman would be little better than any other "socialistic liberal."

Unless.....McCain needs the Jewish vote, and he thinks this would help. Would it? It'd probably give him FL, but FL is red already.

52. I daresay the vetting of all candidates will include the following questions:
Is (s)he a Republican in good standing with the party?

Is (s)he a Good Christian who will bring Jesus into everything (McCain is regarded a bit *weak* on this issue and needs a Bible-thumping running mate)?

Does (s)he regard the crusades against gay marriage and abortion as the most crucial issues in life?

Does (s)he have a long solid record of always being loyal to party leaders?

So no, I don't think it'll be Lieberman.
