Morgan Freeman seriously hurt in car accident

Academy Award winning actor Morgan Freeman was seriously injured in a car accident in Mississippi on Sunday night according to the Mississippi Highway Patrol.

Police report that Freeman, 71, was driving eastbound on Highway 32 near the town of Ruleville, Miss., around 11:30 p.m. when his car left the road and flipped several times.

Police say Freeman and a female passenger had to be extracted from the vehicle and the actor was flown to a hospital in Memphis, Tenn., where he was listed in serious condition. There was no word on the condition of the passenger.

TMZ.com is reporting that state troopers say "The Dark Knight" star was talking at the scene of the accident.

Actor Morgan Freeman is being treated at a Memphis, Tenn., hospital after a bad car crash.

The Mississippi Highway Patrol reports Freeman's car went off Highway 32 near in Tallahatchie County and flipped several times.

Freeman was air lifted to the Regional Medical Center at Memphis (The Med) in critical condition. A woman who was in the car was also taken to the Med.

The WREG-TV Web site reports Freeman may have fallen asleep at the wheel.

The popular Oscar-winning actor, 71, with an authoritative voice and calm demeanor, has grown into one of the most respected figures in modern cinema. He is currently appearing in the blockbuster Batman film "The Dark Knight."

Morgan Freeman may have fallen asleep at the wheel last night right before his bad car wreck.

The actor was driving on Highway 32 in Tallahatchie County when he apparently lost control, flipping his car several times.

WHBQ in Memphis is reporting Freeman was on his way home to Charleston when the smash-up happened. Bill Luckett, Freeman's friend and co-owner of Freeman's restaurant Madidi, said his buddy was sitting up and talking at the hospital.

One source tells TMZ that Freeman has broken several ribs and injured his knee. His female passenger, we're told, had to be cut out of the car using the Jaws of Life. A source says she's suffering from bumps and bruises, but is "all in all in good condition."

Oscar winning actor Morgan Freeman is in a "serious condition" in hospital today after a car accident in Mississippi.

The 71-year-old Hollywood veteran was driving on a freeway near his home at around 11.30pm on Sunday when his car left the road and flipped over several times, according to police.

The actor, who co-starred in the latest Hollywood blockbuster The Dark Knight, and an unidentified female passenger had to be cut out of the vehicle before they were air-lifted to Regional Medical Centre in Memphis.

Kathy Stringer, spokeswoman for the hospital, said he was listed as being in a serious condition. The medical state of his passenger is not known...cont'd

The Electric Company was one of my favorite shows. My younger brothers were hooked on Sesame Street but I'd wait for the Electric Company to come on. It was a lot of fun to watch. They had so many talented people on it.

As for Rita Moreno, she was hot. I had such a big crush on her. I thought she was absolutely the most beautiful woman I had ever seen. I think that between my crush on Moreno and my then-current life goal of playing for the NFL my parents got suspicious of my sexual leanings. They were very cool about it. They sat me down and my mom explained that sometimes women liked women more than they liked me and that was okay. They did that from time to time for a while. It took me a few years to figure out what they were thinking. I was very lucky that they wanted to talk and be supportive. There are too many kids whose parents don't want to talk and turn their backs on their own kids. As it turned out, my crush was fleeting and I turned out to be a (non-breeding) breeder.

His passenger was one of his wife's best friends -- she's fine and has been released from the hospital. Bumps and bruises, according to what I've seen.

The actor ''has a broken arm, broken elbow and minor shoulder damage, but is in good spirits,'' according to a statement from Donna Lee, Freeman's publicist. A hospital spokeswoman said Freeman was in serious condition but would not discuss his injuries.

''He is having a little bit of surgery this afternoon or tomorrow to help correct the damage,'' Lee's statement said. ''He says he'll be OK and is looking forward to a full recovery.''

Bystanders converged on the accident scene trying to get a glimpse of the actor, McFerrin said.

When one person tried to snap a photo with a cell phone camera, Freeman joked, ''no freebies, no freebies,'' McFerrin said.
