Judge: Kilpatrick must post $7,500 bond to remain out of jail
BY M.L. ELRICK • FREE PRESS STAFF WRITER • JULY 25, 2008

Updated at 12:48 p.m.

A stern Detroit judge, saying he has thrown people in jail for less, just found that Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick violated the terms of his bond in his criminal case after a sheriff's deputy testified he was assaulted by the mayor Thursday.

The ruling followed sheriff’s deputy Brian White's testimony this morning that Kilpatrick shouted expletives at him and his partner when White sought to serve a subpoena on Kilpatrick’s friend, Bobby Ferguson, at the mayor’s sister’s home Thursday. White said the mayor then threw him into his investigative partner, Joann Kinney, and made racially charged remarks during the incident.

Judge Ronald Giles of Detroit's 36th District Court changed Kilpatrick's bond from a personal bond in his criminal perjury case to requiring him to post $7,500 cash with the court to remain free.

And Giles revoked the mayor's right to make any trips -- business or otherwise -- without a court hearing, though he allowed previously scheduled travel. He also ordered periodic and random drug screens for the mayor, though there was no suggestion Kilpatrick was under the influence during the alleged assault.

Speaker Pelosi visits to aid Cheeks Kilpatrick’s campaign
BY KATHLEEN GRAY • FREE PRESS STAFF WRITER • JULY 25, 2008

Calling her a visionary leader, Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi was the latest powerful Democrat to travel to Michigan to help U.S. Rep.Carolyn Cheeks Kilpatrick’s reelection efforts.

“When she speaks our colleagues listen, I’m dazzled by her knowledge of the policy,” Pelosi told a crowd of about 120 people at the Downriver Italian American Hall in Wyandotte.

After facing little or no competition since first being elected in 1996, Cheeks Kilpatrick is facing a strong challenge from two Democrats – state Sen. Martha Scott of Highland Park and former state Rep. Mary Waters of Detroit.

The two have gotten in the race, in part, because of the legal problems faced by Cheeks Kilpatrick’s son Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick. Both have either overtly or subtly said that the 13th Congresional District deserves a candidate with integrity and hold a name that can be trusted.

But Kwame Kilpatrick’s name wasn’t mentioned during Pelosi’s visit. Although she did say that, “I admire her being a good and loyal mom.”

1. I have a friend who used to work with the mayor...
Says he is even worse than portrayed. What a loser. I wonder how much of the poor city's money he has wasted over the years.

3. I would had imposed an immediate drug test to even be considered for bail.
And if the drug test wasn't taken within 24 hours he would not be allowed bail at a later date.

5. Far too little for bail.
This asshole is single handedly destroying all the work his predecessor, Dennis Archer, put into restoring Detroit's reputation. It's time for our spineless Michigan pols to get off their asses and get him out of there before it's too late. Perhaps it already is.

11. Thank you.
Granholm needs to step up to the plate but she's remaining decidedly silent. This circus has gone on far too long, IMHO.

13. The $7500 is 10% of the $75,000 bond. Yeah, still low.
But, he's not really a flight risk. (Aside, he's too big to hide.) He has to stay mayor to protect his wife from prosecution. He's staying as long as he can.

An immediate drug test would have been better.

18. I just read the latest report and you're right.
Originally I thought it was a bond of only $7,500 not that it was 10% of the real amount. I agree, though - it's still too low for assaulting a cop while out on personal bond, facing felony charges. I'd be in jail if I'd pulled a stunt like that and with a rather high bail set, I imagine.

7. It is way past time that Gov. Granholm step in and remove this man as mayor.
From reports I've heard, the Michigan Governor has to power and authority to do so.

10. Thank you.
Furthermore? $7,500 bond after pushing a police officer while he's performing his duty? If that had been anyone else in that city, he'd be sitting in jail right now contemplating his stupidity, and bond would have been revoked. The guy is getting away with everything and it infuriates me. I'm one city from Detroit - 1/2 mile from the border - and if our mayor were in half the trouble that guy is in he'd have been recalled by now. I can't believe the apathy (or fear?) about this guy in Detroit. He's an utter disgrace.

His mother's "loyalty" is going to bite her on the a$$ too, or so I hope.

17. No one's sure, and no one admits they did at this point.
There's some rumor of possible election tampering in the last mayoral race. The Feds investigated a lot of absentee ballot stuff as a result. Not sure if they found anything.

The politics in this city are corrupt. I don't think there is another word for it. Bozita downthread says it best: the Kilpatrick family pretty much runs Dem politics in the city proper. Bozita called it the "Friends and Family Criminal Enterprise" and I think she's dead on. Everyone is in bed with everyone else. Kwame Kilpatrick, the mayor, appointed a ton of unqualified friends and family to governmental positions raking in a lot of money during his time in office. He's been busted 1) getting Navigators paid for by the city for his wife (through the Police Department, of all things), 2) misusing a city credit card into the multiple 1000s of dollars, 3) lying in a civil court proceeding after he fired two cops for asking too many questions; the list goes on (and on and on). And still he gets a tap on the wrist when he basically assaults a cop. WTF? Kilpatrick's father is also allegedly under federal investigation, along with the City Council, relating to shady deals with real estate and a waste management company.

The prosecutor here has her work cut out for her. She's tried to get the Detroit judges' bench removed (the court that will try the Mayor on perjury/obstruction of justice/misconduct charges), but no luck. She will probably have to go to the Michigan Supreme Court to get even close to a fair hearing on that one.

In short it's a freaking mess.

9. Pelosi's delusional.
I live in Kilpatrick's district, and my vote against her in the primary has nothing to do with her son, though he is a piece of work (and not in a good way). Her son needs to resign and quit his megalomaniac behavior. The man believes he's entitled to the mayorship yet has done nothing but lie, pad his cronies' pockets and make an ass of himself. He's an utter embarrassment IMHO.

Kilpatrick took on the downriver area of metro Detroit recently, but has done jack for them. She's still all about Detroit and as far as I'm concerned she's useless for those of us outside the city limits. She will still probably win the primary, but I'm betting that most of downriver will vote for either Scott or Waters. She'll have to carry Detroit heavily to stay in, which she probably will..but I'm betting it won't be a decisive victory for her.

12. This Pelosi visit is gonna be worked hard by the GOP. And they'll go after Obama with it.
Yesterday, Michigan was a blue state.

Today, I dunno.

Thanks, Nancy, for linking the Democratic Party leadership to the Kilpatrick Friends and Family Criminal Enterprise.

16. You're dead on, Bozita.
They're already working it on local news opinion forums like the Freep (the Detroit Free Press, not freeper for those not in the area). Obama's being dragged into it left and right by the RW operatives that haunt those boards. Unfair or not, it's only going to get uglier.

Pelosi and the national Dems apparently have no idea what they're doing here in Michigan. This state could seriously go Red this year for a host of stupid mistakes made at the national level. Even a lot of long-time Dems are saying so to me. This isn't good at all.
