Pentagon to recommend more troops for Afghanistan

WASHINGTON - Top Pentagon leaders are expected soon to recommend to Defense Secretary Robert Gates which additional U.S. troops could be sent to Afghanistan over the next month or so, according to a senior military official.

The units are likely to be small and could include engineers, ordnance disposal troops and other support forces needed to shore up fighting needs and the training of Afghan forces. Officials have not ruled out identifying a larger, brigade-sized unit before the end of the year that could either be shifted to Afghanistan from a planned deployment to Iraq or moved from some other location.

U.S. commanders in Afghanistan have been asking for three combat brigades, or roughly 10,000 more troops, to help quash rising violence there.

The senior official, who requested anonymity because the proposals are not public, said the recommendations have not yet been approved by Adm. Mike Mullen, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, or delivered to Gates.

Afghanistan troop increase up to next president: Pentagon

WASHINGTON (AFP) - The Pentagon is unable to send additional combat brigades to Afghanistan this year because of constraints imposed by the war in Iraq, leaving the decision on reinforcements to the next president, a spokesman said Wednesday.

US commanders in Afghanistan have requested three more combat brigades, or about 10,000 troops, to deal with growing insurgent violence in the eastern and southern parts of the country.

But Geoff Morrell, the Pentagon press secretary, said Iraq remains the top priority for the Bush administration, which places limits on the forces available for duty in Afghanistan over the short term.

"It looks as though this government is going to work to provide additional forces for Afghanistan next year," Morrell said. "How many, whether it is the three additional brigades that the commanders want I think is a question for the next administration."

6. Well Curtis LeMay isn't here to Bomb them back to the "Stone Age"
Good Luck Idiots and FOOLS

If your officer's dead and the sergeants look white,
Remember it's ruin to run from a fight:
So take open order, lie down, and sit tight,
And wait for supports like a soldier.
Wait, wait, wait like a soldier . . .

When you're wounded and left on Afghanistan's plains,
And the women come out to cut up what remains,
Jest roll to your rifle and blow out your brains
An' go to your Gawd like a soldier.
Go, go, go like a soldier,
Go, go, go like a soldier,
Go, go, go like a soldier,
So-oldier _of_ the Queen!

Are you implying that the deaths of American troops are a good thing?

3. The Russians must be laughing at us.
This is the country that drained so much from them financially and military that it had a great part in the breakup of the Soviet Union.

5. You mean Ronnie Reagan didn't bring down the Soviet Union?
C'mon, man. The Soviet empire collapsed when Ronnie told Mr. Gorbachev to tear down that wall!

Right?

Man, I'm bummed!
