Savage Loses Advertisers

By JACQUES STEINBERG; Compiled by JULIE BLOOM
Published: July 23, 2008
A group of seven Mississippi talk radio stations owned by Telesouth Communications has dropped Michael Savages nationally syndicated radio program over comments the host made last week suggesting that nearly every child with autism was a brat of inattentive parents. Michael Savages comments about autistic children were beyond inexcusable and are unacceptable, the station group said in a statement posted Tuesday on its Web site, supertalkms.com. The cancellation follows the decision on Monday by Aflac, the insurance company, to pull its advertising from the show. On his Web site, Michaelsavage.com, the host posted a letter on Monday in which he iterated the central point he said he had been trying to make on his July 16 program: that autism is too often misdiagnosed in the cases of children, or falsely diagnosed, at least partly as a means of wringing resources. Let the truly autistic be treated, he wrote. Let the falsely diagnosed be free. On July 16, Mr. Savage, above, referred to autism as a fraud, a racket, and asserted that what 99 percent of children with autism most needed was a parent willing to tell them things like, Dont act like a moron.

34. I signed. Here's the text of my message
I am the father of an autistic child. My son's need for structure and stability has called upon me to be more of an authoritative, disciplinarian-type of parent than I ever thought I would need to be.

For Mr. "Savage" to say that my child does not a father figure in his life is a personal insult.

Further, what was said on his program is nothing short of advocating child abuse. I hold any and all radio stations who continue to air his program as advocating the same, and thus being anti-child and anti-family. This goes for any and all sponsors of his program as well.

Weiner rants and raves about Liberals (you, me, whomever), Democrats, rethuglicans, bush, Pelosi etc etc etc. Most people take it, and don't care usually, we are adults and heck we can take a hit, critism and whatnot.

Now, when you go after defensless children with a mental retardation/handicap that's when ALOT of people go, hold the fuck on buddy, you just crossed the line, and hold the scumbag accountable.

Of course this is all my opinion.

YMMV.

7. How professional?
This is part of the result of ageism in news and entertainment. Older people have learned, sometimes through hard experience, that you don't do racist or prejudicial stuff. The young, tooth-bleached, hair-bleached news readers America employs don't have that kind of sense. They also think it's "cute" to "push the envelope."

And given the behavior of "professionals" like Limbaugh and O'Reilly, how can the Botox newsfolk know any better?

Good, he deserve what he get.. Very good when this "savage" man is out of the airwaves he is using...

As a man with AD/DD I know all the problems who is coming with that, it is something difficult, but i have managed to survive even that I wish I never have had AD/DD. It is difficult enough to live, then to also have all the problems who are coming with AD/DD.. (Thankfully I have not AD/HD)

And with a brother who have Aspergers syndrome I know to well what Autism can do.. Even that my brother is pretty well functioning because our home was a place where you was treated as the next gay. Even that both my brother and I was given "special time" in school in many subject we do managed somehow to grow up to "Normal people" who are living for us self, even that my brother are living in ha home with some supervisition....

I don't know how they are finding out about autism in the US, but here in my country it is a long drawn out proses, where you are been tested for almost everything else... But in my brothers case, it was very clear from the first time that "something" was wrong..

Anyway, this "savage" should just be thrown off the air. And the folks who support him, should be told what they are supporting.. To harass, and to go after the most weak people in a country is just cowardice. But that is maybe what the right wingers do, go after the weak and the powerless.. Because to go after the powerfully means you have to have a spine, and not many in the right wing group have that. A spine that is..

Thank you. It is difficult to live with "invisible" handicap, than to be harassed by the Radio.. And therefore maybe too the folks around you.. This is very difficult for "we" who are living with it, to also be harassed for our handicap. It is not easy to always must told other why we are on "trygd" and why we can't work 8 hour a day or more.. If I managed to work 8 hour a day I would do it, but my health, both fycial and psychical denied me that.. I can work 4 hour a day, but then I am really tired... When I do worked 8 hour a day (in fact I worked more because of bus/train connection who was almost two hour every day) I was almost dead when I came home.. And the next day it was the same. Finally I broke down and have my "episode" but I survived somehow.

But anyway I am living in a country where we can have such disability, without be told to go drown ourself, and we can live our life as best we can, with some support from the government...

19. thank you for posting this
I've been outraged since I heard about Savage and his remarks re: autism. I had a brother that was autistic but was referred to as being an "MR" when the symptoms began when he was a few years old. He was not an "MR" (mentally retarded) as he grew up to become a fine man and he had a job that he worked at arduously 6+ days a week.

Being they never knew what was wrong with him, he was experimented on with many drugs/treatments in the 1960s.

Sadly, he died of metastasized cancer in his early 40s.

And yes, he was autistic I believe as he fit every description of it to a tee.

I hope Savage rots in hell for his crude remarks and I hope he loses someone someday that might have a medical problem that he gives a damn about (if possible).

Thanks again for your post re: this subject.

If more of the people who have this disabilities have just dared to stand up, and told the world what this type of thing is, maybe, just maybe the stigma of been handicapped like my brother, and to some point myself had been lifted, and a more humane attitude when it come to the weak and wounder able have been the norm. Today if you are not that 110% person, you are not many cen's worth anymore.. And I for one are meaning this is the wrong way to go, when it come to helping and giving folks the help they need to live like "NORMAL" do. My brother who are autistic is an master carver, when it come to wood. And he have "blossomed" the last couple of year when it come to make pictures in wood.. You would never believe all the detail, and the time hi are using to this pictures he is making.. And he is SO proud to show it to everyone who want to look at it.. He have find his specialty in the world, something he truly can master. And he are doing it with an expertise that I would never manage to master. Even if I got 4 year of carving instruction... He could if possible live by this if he wanted ;)

I am sorry about your brother, and in the 1960s it was dangerous to be handicapped, not just in the US but in many western country the whole concept of treating handicapped with dignity as something they seldom did.. My mother who has some physical problems, was young in the 1960s. And was medicated as hell.. But somehow she managed to not go total mental, and have 3 children, my older sister myself and my little brother. Who was 30 this year. Good grief why the year have passed :eyes:

Cancer is a bad illness to have, and to have metastasized Cancer is maybe worse. I do hope that his dead was a peacefully one. Not a painfully lingering death then.

Savage and Co should be told what it is to have this type of handicap. It is enough people who are just arrogant, and tell you all the time that you are lazy because you can't do 16 hour of job straight and then do the same thing the next day and so on 5 days a week. And they could not understand why people who looks as in perfect health possible can have handicap.. Savage deserve his name, and should rot something very hot when his time are coming up... And not just for this, but for many, many other things he have told his public on the airwaves.. I could not understand that why this type of folks would get a hour of airwaves. In Europe this type of folks would be banned before the hour was ended.. Because in Europe the airwaves is much more regulated than in US I guess... And for the most part the european airwaves have "some" decency in their radio host..

Even the fair right movement, who sometimes have a radio channel open are not thar rude.. And the Fair right movement can be VERY rude..

Mr Savage is just a Coward. And should be named as one to.. TO go after the weaker is no noble act but just dam cowardisme.. And I have to say, he fit his name perfect (Savage means "barbar" in translating to norwigian)

27. thanks Diclotican
I'm glad to know about your brother doing so well and has such a fine skill to show to the world! :) My brother was the same with his job, dedicated right up until the very end. He underwent massive chemotherapy yet despite this, he continued to work part-time at his job as he was so afraid they would get rid of him even though he had thousands of hours of sick time he could have used.

You are so very right. In this country if you cannot give 150%+++ all of the time in a job, they don't have a whole lot of use for you it seems to me. If you happen to have a disability or a serious medical problem, they simply find a way to get rid of you (aka a "management decision").

My brother believed that he would beat the cancer but we knew he could not beat it despite his tremendous will to live. I played along with his belief that he would live and win right up until the very end even though I knew it was a fantasy world that he was living in. When you'd ask him how he felt he'd say he felt "ok" no matter what the case was. I often wonder if he knew how sick he really was but in hindsight, maybe it was a gift that he never realized it perhaps?

This country sickens me when I see how many of the citizens are treated here. There are many very good people in the USA (I'm sure the good outnumber the bad is my perspective), but sadly, many of the bad ones are the ones that feed at the troughs of the corporations and the rich most certainly despise the sick and/or disabled. Savage is one of these pigs IMO.

We'll see what happens to Savage someday. I hope they fire him personally. I'll be signing that petition! I think you are correct, he'll find a very hot hell in the afterlife.

Thank you for your very kind words re: my late brother. I hope your brother lives for many years and doesn't have to ever go through something like mine did.

He has really a gift when it come to wood, when I see a wood thing, he se something inside there, and are carving it out to all to se. Amazing if you ask me ;). And I would say he is given much self esteem because of that skill he have. Many who have autism are very dedicated to the little thing they really can. If it is painting or wood or what ever their do master. I know a man who are working night shift at a house where severe autism folk are living. And one of them can count the gravel in the car park. But he cant do so much else. But he can count the stones and are putting them in order, by wight and by substance.. I guess my brother have no sick leave ever too...

I find it to be bad to be treated as second or third class citizen just because you have a disability or an handicap. Why could we who have handicap or an disability do some work, instead of been treated that way?. Okay we may not manage to work that many hour that "ordinary" folks can, but we can do our share.. If the rest of the world was given us a chance.. No difficult task if you ask me:

MANY who have autism in more or less aware of death, but they seen to not fully understand the concept behind death.. When our father died for a month away, I was calling him to tell him that our father was dead. He was taking on straight hands and say "Okay". But I guess he, inside was sad. But had/have some problem with showing it.. Well I have to try to get into him then I guess ;) We have a good contact. I guess he somehow relied of my for something.. Amd we are just 2 year apart in age to. So he is not just my little brother, but also my friend in many ways :)

I don't believe that the masses is evil,in Norway as in USA..But many are ignorant of what type of handicap are a disability even that you look normal and walk and talk normal. If I have had a serious handicap, as could not walk or something like that. Then everyone could understand why I am on "trygd". But because I can walk, talk, and even can drive a Car without fuzz, then many ask why I could just not start in a "Normal" work.. If I could do it, I would..

Mr Savage and the others who prey on the week one should be treated the same way that THEY are treating they who have disability if you ask me. Not that I wish mr Savage something horrible, he is living to far away from me anyway so I have not the intermediate "hatred" to the man. Mr Bush on the other hand, that is something else :evilfrown: Never believed I should manage to hate a man from thousands of km away, but I have to psychically leave the rom when he are on TV. I have a great dislike for the man...

You can tell many thing about a country of the way you are treating the wouderable, or the weak one. I would not say my own country are perfect, not by far. But I do hope we can be told to be carefully with our weaker ones. Even that some don't get the help they need or want..

I hope also that my little brother could live for many, many year. We maybe be old together too ;). And hopefully we would have the same friendship we have today. ;).
And I do hope your brother, even that he is dead, are given you some good memories, from the time he was living. It is Important to rembember what he was, so he is not forgotten.

I am not black, not that poor, but I have also Asma who can be very painfully if not medicated.. But thankfully I do have medicine for it, and the illness is not bad because I am working hard to not let the illness give into me :). But I use a Ventolin or two after a month or two.. It depend of how the days are. Someday I can go a day without using it at all. Other days I would use it much just to survive the dam day... And funny enough, it is worse in the summer, than in the winter....

Mr Savage is just a man who are living on others ignorance when it come to others illness. And if he ever get asma or some other illness, I really hope he would be hit hard. Very hard. He deserve to live 20 year, with a hard attack of asma or something like that.. Then he "might" understand why folks have help from the public... This type of medicine is "life saving" for us who use it. Litary.. In College I was hit hard once.. In gym. And was just "breathless" for a hour or so. Vas in very bad shape. But I was going over it.. But I was not given the medicine before I was 30 or so, they couldn't find it out somehow. But when I was starting to be allergic to pollen and so on, Then the point was to the asma. And then I have getting the right medicine. And my dear Ventolin is my trusted companion when out.. Down to the City, or other places ;).

Many African American children die from asthma. They get less treatment than their white counterparts. For him to take this tragedy that black families struggle with every day and twist it like that....he's horrible.

since I've read the obituaries of black kids whose life has been cut short by asthma.

I've also interviewed black, inner-city parents whose kids have spent WEEKS in the hospital (and we all know how eager the hospitals are to keep people there for long stays).

They must teach the kids how to depress their O2 levels is what I'm thinking....pretty neat trick!!!

36. Lynn Samuels staunchly defended him
for his comments. She's as fucked in the head as he is. I wish Sirius would get someone else for her time slot.

37. As the father of a 3 year-old child with Down Syndrome, I'm really not mad at Savage...
...I feel sad for him. It can't be easy to carry around with you such profound ignorance

Indeed, it must be difficult to go around with all the hate and ignorance to others.. mr Savage must be an lonely, lonely bitter man there he is walking in his life... I pity him more than I am made about him...

45. Savage Loses Advertisers Over Autism Remarks
Source: ABC News

Michael Savage -- one of the most popular talk show hosts in the nation -- is used to controversy. It's been one week since Savage made controversial remarks about autism, referring to those diagnosed with the condition as "brats, idiots, and morons."

Several big advertisers have pulled their commercials from the syndicated "Savage Nation" radio show, and now, thousands of parents and protesters are urging Savage to step down, calling his words "hate speech."

------

And the backlash didn't stop there. Sponsors of Savage's radio show, such as AFLAC Insurance and Home Depot, have pulled their advertisements. Home Depot co-founder Bernie Marcus gave $25 million for the creation of Autism Speaks, in 2005, and sits on the group's board of directors.

Savage's syndicator, Talk Radio Network, issued a statement in his support: "The network is satisfied that he did not mean any disrespect to autistic children or their families, but was, instead, reiterating his longstanding concerns on public health issues."

46. That is, without a doubt...
The lamest excuse I have ever read. TRN should be ashamed of themselves and fire Savage in expitiation.

I certainly hope that those folks in the Autism community do not let up on this until Savage is ruined.
