Canada sends deserter from Colo. back to U.S.

EL PASO COUNTY - A U.S. soldier who went AWOL in 2005 is in Colorado sitting inside a jail cell at the El Paso County Criminal Justice Center.

The Canadian government deported Robin Long, 25, last week. It's believed to be a first for an American military deserter since the start of the Iraq war.

Long was assigned to a unit out of Fort Carson. In the spring of 2005, the Army ordered him to report to the Colorado military post for an eventual deployment into Iraq. Long simply decided he wasn't going to show up.

He quickly moved up into Canada. It's believed upwards of a couple hundred American military deserters are living in Canada at this moment, says Lee Zaslofsky, who works with many of them.

This is a VERY unpopular move here. We've always welcomed deserters and conscientious objectors from the US, especially over immoral and unnecessary wars.

This was a gift from one unpopular leader to another.
