Ford to lay off 1,000 workers at St. Louis-area plant
ST. LOUIS -- Ford Motor Co. said Thursday it will lay off about 1,000 workers at its area assembly plant, or about 37 percent of the plant’s work force, in April.

The world’s second-largest automaker said the cuts, effective April 26, would result from the elimination of one of the Hazelwood plant’s two 10-hour shifts, Ford spokesman Ed Lewis said from the company’s headquarters in Dearborn, Mich. The plant employs 2,700 workers.

Displaced workers would be offered jobs at other Ford sites nationwide, Lewis said. Ford representatives were to spell out the layoffs with plant workers and managers Thursday.

5. THis is nuts
1,000 in St Louis
1,000 in Ok
750 someplace else that I did not catch the location on.

It's getting to the point where we need to start a daily layoff watch thread along the lines of the stock market watch thread just to keep track of all this ecomomic recovery.

8. WE NEED a daily Layoff THREAD
I like the stock market thread. I dread the daily troops killed thread, but we need that to to remind anyone who cares about the Human toll of the immoral illegal WAR

6. this economy's hemorrhaging
weren't there something like 20,000 layoffs mentioned last week? but hey! 1,000 new jobs were added in december.

of course, bush says the economy's perking along. he doesn't read the papers, remember? his trusted inner circle tells him stuff.

god, he reminds me of governor petomaine (sp??)/mel brooks in blazing saddles.
