Suicide blast kills 7 in Afghanistan
KANDAHAR, Afghanistan - A suicide bomber on foot attacked a foreign military convoy in southern Afghanistan on Friday killing one soldier, an Afghan interpreter and five civilians, police and the U.S. military said.

The attack was in Helmand, one of Afghanistan's most violence-plagued provinces to the west of Kandahar province where Afghan government and NATO soldiers battled Taliban militants on the outskirts of the provincial capital this week.

Provincial police chief Hussein Andiwal initially said 10 civilians were killed in the attack in Girishk district but he later said he had been misinformed and five civilians had been killed.

Afghan national army soldiers look at dead bodies of the Taliban after fighting in Manara village of the Arghandabad district in the southern city of Kandahar. Afghan and NATO-led forces cleared out Taliban militants from the outskirts of Kandahar city on Thursday, killing or wounding hundreds of the insurgents, the provincial governor said.

A U.S.-led coalition force operating in Afghanistan said one of its soldiers and an Afghan interpreter were killed.

1. Taliban are "eating their own"
Kandahar was their motherland capitol, now they are killing the citizens of that city and in the mudhut hamlets they 'victoriously captured' along the outskirts.

Afghans count Taliban dead in valley near Kandahar

MONARAI, Afghanistan (Reuters) - NATO and Afghan forces held mopping up operations, hunting Taliban fighters and burying the dead on Friday, after an air and ground offensive routed hundreds of insurgents from a valley near Kandahar city.

The allies mounted the offensive on Wednesday after the Taliban took control of the Arghandab valley, 20 km (12 miles) northwest of Kandahar.

Around 600 militants, including some who had escaped a week ago during a mass jail break from a prison in the city, had taken up positions in a cluster of villages, according to a provincial official and a Taliban spokesman.

On Friday, the governor of Kandahar province took a group of journalists to the battle zone after 800 Afghan troops, backed by hundreds of, mainly Canadian, NATO soldiers had wrested back control of the district.

In the past, Taliban fighters have seized control of villages overnight, only to melt away when the NATO and government forces appeared. A gathering of such a large force was atypical of the guerrillas' tactics
They have most commonly resorted to suicide attacks and roadside bombs to harry NATO and government forces.
