Chinese were reclassified as "black" in a landmark South African ruling allowing them access to economic benefits.
The country's estimated 20,000 ethnic Chinese were classed as "coloured" during the apartheid era but campaigners argued that since 1994 they had been seen largely as "white".
This had excluded them from South Africa's economic empowerment schemes which give preference for job applications and contract tenders to black, Indian and mixed-race groups.
At the High Court in Pretoria, a judge ruled that Chinese South Africans must in law be considered eligible for those affirmative action programmes.

"Under apartheid, we were not considered white, we could not vote, we could not go to certain places, we needed permits, we were marginalised like all the other non-whites.
"But then since 1994, we have been excluded from job interviews, business opportunities, even share offers, because now suddenly everyone decided that we were 'white'. Today, finally, has changed that."
