Feds: 27 levees could overflow if sandbags fail

By ALLEN G. BREED – 3 hours ago

OAKVILLE, Iowa (AP) — As southeastern Iowa and other parts of the Midwest prepared for the Mississippi River's wrath, the rest of Iowa began the slow move from protection to cleanup.

The federal government predicts that 27 levees could potentially overflow along the river if the weather forecast is on the mark and a massive sandbagging effort fails to raise the level of the levees, according to a map obtained Monday by The Associated Press.

Officials are placing millions of sandbags on top of the levees in Illinois, Iowa and Missouri to prevent overflowing. There is no way to predict whether these levees will break, said Ron Fournier, a spokesman with the Army Corps of Engineers in Iowa.

Six levees have already overflowed in the past three days: two in Iowa and four in Missouri.

5. volunteers filled nearly 10 million sandbags so far
that's the number I just heard on CNN. I almost puked listening to his canned speech this am. He mentioned something about there being "too many disasters during my presidency" at which point I had said out loud, "and what did you do you MF SOB, while Rome burned - just had to have that last "tea" with Queen Lizzy."

At least Obama was there helping fill sandbags in Illinois while McCain planned his fundraiser with "sit back and enjoy it" Texas oil boys.

9. my thoughts exactly! He said "we have enough $ for this disaster but
but, but, but....which meant basically "we need that money for our war in Iraq"!
In other words, their little war has bankrupted this country to the point that we no longer have enough money to fix America.

So then he says that Congress needs to add more money to the Supplementary for the Disaster relief fund. ITMT, he hasn't even declared many of the counties as disaster areas so that they can get monetary relief started. :spank: :grr:

7. pesticides, herbicides leaked into water from farmlands - Deadzones?
what a toxic brew there is now in those waters. In the floods of '96-7 in Oregon, hundreds of 50 gallon drums filled with only God knows what floated down the Willamette river into the Columbia river then out to sea.
The next several years, deadzones started to appear along our coast killing every living sea critter for miles.

Will these chemicals get into the Mississippi river? Most likely they will and that is going to be a years long problem.
