Waxman: Abramoff influenced White House, met with Bush six times

Imprisoned former GOP lobbyist Jack Abramoff "influenced some White House actions," and the Bush administration "conducted an inadequate and incomplete internal review before making public representations minimizing Mr. Abramoff's access to White House officials," says a new report released by the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee, chaired by Rep. Henry Waxman (D-Calif.). Abramoff had his photograph taken with President Bush on six different occasions, with four of those taking place at political receptions and the other two coming at an annual White House Hanukkah party and an event in the Old Executive Office Building.

- snip -

"In addition, the documents provided to the Committee by the White House document over 70 new contacts between Mr. Abramoff and his associates and White House officials," the report states. A Sept. 2006 report by the same committee said Abramoff and his lobbying associates had 485 contacts with White House officials, a figure the White House challenged as inaccurate.

According to Waxman's panel, in addition to the "over 70 new contracts," internal White House documents confirm "over 80 of the contacts" detailed in e-mails and documents turned over to committee investigators by Abramoff's former firm, Greenberg Traurig. "The White House documents and e-mails do not corroborate 401 of the lobbying contacts described in the Greenberg Traurig documents," the report concludes. Abramoff and his fellow lobbyists "persuaded White House officials to intervene to remove from office a State Department official, who advocated reforms in the Northern Marianas Islands that Mr. Abramoff opposed." The Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands was one of Abramoff's most lucrative lobbying clients, paying his firm millions of dollars in fees.

The committee's "proposed report" states that the evidence it examined "contradicts White House claims that with respect to his White House contacts, Mr. Abramoff 'got nothing out of it. Not only did Mr. Abramoff achieve some positive results from his White House lobbying, but White House officials sought out the views of Mr. Abramoff and his colleagues on matters of official business."

Darn, I broke my rule about never linking to Politico. Here is the original source of the report at the committee's site: http://oversight.house.gov/story.asp?ID=1996

"Chairman Waxman and Ranking Member Davis issued a proposed Committee report on White House contacts with Jack Abramoff that concludes that Mr. Abramoff had personal contact with President Bush, that high-level White House officials held Mr. Abramoff and his associates in high regard and solicited recommendations from them on policy matters, that Mr. Abramoff and his associates influenced some White House actions, and that Mr. Abramoff and his associates offered White House officials expensive tickets and meals."

I think, "Well, there's your problem RIGHT THERE. Anything THAT unelected imbecile has to say is BOUND to be wrong, or a misunderestimation, or a damn lie, or at best, an unintentional truth (a la, "...catapult the propaganda..." and the like).

And are we surprised at Georgie's denials?? NOOOOoooooo. And do we believe them???? NOOOOOOoooooo.

2. This is not true
Bush said he didn't know Abramoff and might have met him in a "photo op"
or on a rope line but he was sure that he didn't know Abramoff and besides
both republicans & dems were getting money from him too.

10. You are kidding, right?
Abramhoff is the single reason they made the WH entrance/security logs a national security issue.

Yeah, he may have given money to some Dems, but anyone in Congress who's for sale shouldn't be there. Obama gets it, now the DNC gets it, and, pretty soon, the rest of us will get it: There is no place for corruption in our government system.

While Abramhoff had the WH's attention, the Republicans were the majority in Congress. Those who have recently retired were up to their eyeballs in it, and left in hopes of minimizing the damage - Delay and Hastert are two who deserve extensive investigating. Any blowback toward the WH is a huge bonus.

7. Impeachment, anyone?
I tell ya, Bush is gonna have to rape children in the Rose Garden before Congress does anything.

And even then, they'll find a reason to give him a pass.

Anyone found Congress' spine laying around somewhere? They sure don't seem to have one.

27. The 2006 Abramoff Investigation = Waxman's Committee website
Here is an entire web site by Waxman's Committee:
http://oversight.house.gov/abramoff/index.asp

Following Mr. Abramoff's guilty plea in January, President Bush and other top White House officials issued repeated statements that Mr. Abramoff was a virtual stranger to the White House. The documents reviewed by the Committee tell a different story. They show that between January 2001 and March 2004, there were 485 lobbying contacts between Mr. Abramoff and his associates and White House officials.

These documents, if accurate, provide evidence that White House officials took multiple actions that benefited Mr. Abramoff and his clients, including: ensuring the release of $16 million for the construction of a jail for the Mississippi Band of the Choctaw; pressuring a Senate office to advance legislation to resolve a land dispute affecting the Sandia Pueblo of New Mexico; endorsing or declining to endorse political candidates; and intervening to secure the termination of a State Department employee who had taken positions contrary to those advocated by Mr. Abramoff.

In addition, the records indicate that Mr. Abramoff and his associates billed clients over $24,000 for meals and drinks with White House officials and offered White House officials tickets to 19 events, including floor seats to Wizards games and tickets to U2 and Bruce Springsteen concerts. At current prices, the face value of some of the tickets exceeded $1,000.

================
E-mails - The committee reviewed thousands of e-mails between Jack Abramoff, his associates, and government officials. The e-mails cited in the report are available in PDF format organized by Bates number.

31. Oldie but goodie: TX Observer's "The Pimping of the Presidency"
"The Pimping of the Presidency"

http://www.texasobserver.org/article.php?aid=1969

Four months after he took the oath of office in 2001, President George W. Bush was the attraction, and the White House the venue, for a fundraiser organized by the alleged perpetrator of the largest billing fraud in the history of corporate lobbying.
In May 2001, Jack Abramoffs lobbying client book was worth $4.1 million in annual billing for the Greenberg Traurig law firm. He was a friend of Bush advisor Karl Rove. He was a Bush Pioneer, delivering at least $100,000 in bundled contributions to the 2000 campaign. He had just concluded his work on the Bush Transition Team as an advisor to the Department of the Interior. He had sent his personal assistant Susan Ralston to the White House to work as Roves personal assistant. He was a close friend, advisor, and high-dollar fundraiser for the most powerful man in Congress, Tom DeLay. Abramoff was so closely tied to the Bush Administration that he could, and did, charge two of his clients $25,000 for a White House lunch date and a meeting with the President. From the same two clients he took to the White House in May 2001, Abramoff also obtained $2.5 million in contributions for a non-profit foundation he and his wife operated.
