McClellan: Bush should have fired Rove

WASHINGTON (AP) -- Former White House spokesman Scott McClellan says the president should have fired Karl Rove for his involvement in the Valerie Plame scandal.

McClellan, who spoke on NBC's "Meet the Press," says he felt burned by the president's top political adviser and I. Lewis "Scooter" Libby, Dick Cheney's former chief of staff.

He says Rove and Libby assured him they had nothing to do with leaking the identity of CIA operative Valerie Plame. But, according to a criminal investigation, Rove and Libby did help pass her name on to the media.

McClellan says the president should have stood by his promise to the American public to fire anyone in his administration who had anything to do with the scandal.

McClellan writes in his book, which offers a scathing rebuke of the Bush administration, that the president backpedaled to protect Rove.
