Vice President Cheney says Iraq withdrawal would lead to future return engagement
Source: AP

NEW YORK: Vice President Dick Cheney warned that a Democrat-led troop withdrawal could condemn a future generation of American soldiers to return to the Iraqi battlefield.

In a Thursday evening speech in Manhattan that touched on tax cuts, energy, U.S. security and the conflict in Iraq, Cheney told more than 700 Republican donors that it was critical for Republicans to win Congress and retain the White House on Nov. 4.

"The stakes are very high," Cheney said at the New York Republican State Committee's annual dinner-fundraiser. "Whether the issue is the economy or energy or the federal courts or national security, the right answers for our nation are not coming from Democrats but from Republicans."

Democratic candidate Sen. Barack Obama has said he would remove U.S. combat troops within 16 months of taking office. Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton has said she would begin a pullout within 60 days after becoming president. The Republican candidate, Sen. John McCain, supports continued U.S. military involvement in Iraq.

The Democratic National Committee, asked to comment on Cheney's speech, said: "The Bush-Cheney-McCain propaganda machine was hard at work again tonight as Dick Cheney promised McCain's 100 years in Iraq and not the change of course Americans are looking for."

7. Interesting logic - "if we don't stay there forever, we may need to return". Huh?
Can they be as utterly stupid as we think? They must be profiting from this big time to keep up such perpetuation of falsehoods!

18. Have we ever had to return to the "Vietnamese battlefield"?
Edited on Fri May-30-08 10:04 AM by butlerd
.....................................................................................

Didn't think so.

By HIS logic, one could say that, by refusing to remove Saddam from power in the 1991 Gulf War, HE (and the first President Bush) condemned a future generation of American soldiers to return to the Iraqi battlefield. Of course, his logic is totally flawed but if he's going to argue that withdrawal from Iraq now would result in us needing to go back in there at some point anyway as a reason for the public to continue to support of a horribly botched occupation and a now totally indefensible (and illegal) invasion of a sovereign (however misguided) country then I think he needs to explain his public support for the first Bush administration's (correct) decision NOT to exceed the UN mandate and overthrow Saddam's regime because they were (rightly) fearful of American troops getting caught in the middle of sectarian violence and being bogged down in an indefinite occupation.
By his logic, didn't Reagan put us into a position of having to go back into Lebanon since we withdrew from there? What about Somalia (well, we ARE kind of back in there albeit in a more limited fashion-airstrikes)?
By his logic, Republicans during the Reagan-Bush years have been the ones to actually put future generations of American soldiers in the position of possibly having to go back to the "battlefields" of several countries to "fix" the problems, some of which we created by getting involved in the first place and others that must exist (according to Cheney) because of our "withdrawal" from them.
Not to mention the fact that the "answers" coming from Republicans like Cheney, who keep stoking this "fear of withdrawal", consist solely of future generations of American soldiers fighting and dying in Iraq and Afghanistan to attempt (vainly in my opinion) to clean up the messes caused by our invasions of these countries and, in some cases, new problems that we ended up CREATING (i.e. Al-Queda in Iraq) as a result of our horribly misguided actions (primarily in Iraq).

castrated and hung out to dry a long time ago. He's perverted and twisted and one of the very few people who needs to be sent to prison and kept in solitary confinement for the rest of his unnatural life.
