San Luis Obispo TribuneState Sen. Abel Maldonado, a Santa Maria Republican, has turned in enough signatures to qualify as a write-in candidate in the Democratic primary June 3, a move his write-in Democratic opponent, attorney Dennis Morris of Pismo Beach, calls “astonishing.”
Morris said Maldonado is trying to keep from having a Democratic opponent in the November general election. He also criticized the senator for using his mother as an excuse to run in the primary.
... No Democrat appears on the June 3 primary ballot in Maldonado’s district. If Maldonado gathers at least 3,689 write-in votes — one-tenth of the number at the last election—and beats Morris, he would appear on the November ballot as both the Democratic and Republican candidate.
... Mark Buchman, chairman of the San Luis Obispo County Democratic Central Committee, said he was surprised Maldonado would try to run as a Democrat.
“It’s really weird,” he said. “I can’t imagine why somebody that’s been an assemblyman and a senator and supposedly touts himself as being successful would feel like he needs to do this.”
