MEXICO CITY, July 24 (AP)President Vicente Fox’s campaign violated election law by accepting more than half a million dollars in illegal donations during his successful presidential bid in 2000, investigators charged Thursday.
THE FEDERAL Electoral Institute said in a report that the Fox campaign took donations of $100,000 and $160,000 from two foreign donors. The report didn’t name the alleged donors.
Investigators compiling the report also found that Fox’s campaign received $284,000 in contributions from sitting senators from his conservative National Action Party, also an election law violation. ---
In addition, the president’s campaign failed to report $9.3 million in general donations it received throughout the entire campaign, the report said. ---
In March, federal electoral officials fined the former ruling party known $45 million for accepting illegal campaign contributions.
