Obama plans return to Iowa to mark campaign's close

EUGENE, Ore. - Laying a symbolic claim to his party's presidential nomination, Democrat Barack Obama will mark the latest round of primary voting with a rally in Iowa where his solid win in the January caucuses propelled him to his status as the likely nominee.

In announcing the rally, Obama aides on Saturday described Iowa as "a critical general election state that Democrats must win in November." The announcement came as Obama was campaigning for primaries Tuesday in Oregon and Kentucky.

Obama has built a solid lead in delegates over rival Hillary Rodham Clinton, and he is working overtime to cast an image of inevitability to his campaign for the nomination. In recent days, he has spent more time focused on his differences with likely Republican nominee John McCain than sparring with Clinton.

Iowa has been a swing state in recent elections. Democrat Al Gore narrowly carried the state in 2000, and President Bush collected the state's seven electoral votes by just over 10,000 votes in 2004. Since that time, however, Democrats have build a substantial edge in registered voters, and turnout in the January precinct caucuses was at record levels.

5. The Magistrate explained The Slaughter Rule to me in a different context.

It's the rule invoked at Little League games to declare a winner when the score becomes too lopsided, to spare the losing team excessive embarrassment.

Obama should not declare victory. In fact if cared about the party at all, he would graciously bow out. Hill is a superior candidate and has a better chance in November. I do not know why Obama will not listen to reason. She is the better candidate.

The voters may have spoken, but they were to stupid not to pick the correct candidate. This is what the super delegates are for. They should over ride the stupidity of the people that voted for anyone other than Hill.

Let the Democratic voters (not Super Delegates but regular delegates) in FL and MI have their say. What are you afraid of DNC? Liberals might win the agenda?

Forget the convention where the delegates get to vote who will be our candidate or is it easy to act like the winner and we won't notice the primary has not gone to the end of the process...the DNC convention.

I don't know how someone who is objective and looks at the math at hand can come to any other conclusion that Obama is the nominee.

He has a lead that is all but impossible to overcome.

We all knew McCain was the nominee even before he secured the magic number, it was just a matter of waiting for the shoe to drop.

I don't understand how a Democrat, no matter how devoted to their particular candidate can suggest that the party appoint the nominee rather than have one elected democratically.

If you insinuate that the voters shouldn't chose the nominee, rather the party should, why do we even have a primary season?

Clinton lost because she grossly mismanaged her campaign.

You could argue that she is the stronger candidate, and assuming that is true for the sake of argument, giving her, the loser, the nomination would in and of itself make her completely unelectable.

We are worried about party unity when the winner actually WON, never mind telling the democratic base and everyone that voted for Obama that their votes don't count and overturning the election in favor of the loser.

That would render her defeated in the General election in August.
