Bush An "Appeaser," Says Egyptian Press
Source: A/P

(CBS/AP) Egypt's state-owned press opened fire Saturday on U.S. President George W. Bush as he arrived for talks with regional leaders at the conclusion of a five-day Mideast tour.

The newspapers, whose management are all appointed by the government, criticized Mr. Bush's speech Thursday in front of the Israeli Knesset for being overly supportive of the Israelis and not mentioning the Palestinians' plight.

"The Torah-inspired speech of Bush raised question marks over the credibility of the U.S. role in the Middle East," wrote Mursi Atallah, the publisher of Al-Ahram, the flagship daily of the state-owned press. "Bush aims to do nothing but appeasing Israel."

Mr. Bush's tour, which included stops in Israel and Saudi Arabia, represents another effort to push Mideast peace talks forward as his time in office winds down.

1. "represents another effort to push Mideast peace talks forward..."
and, as with every other thing this assclown has ever touched, it's gone to hell because he touched it.

2. Sure, Bush is an appeaser. And,
McCain says, "It would be wonderful if we lived in a world with no enemies..."

I say, It would be wonderful if we had a government that did not create so many enemies.

How?
Aggression.
Militarism.
Covert operations.
Hypocracy.
Support for foreign governments based on greed.
Interference.
War mongering.
etc.

3. A side note: Although this administration has perfected lying and manipulation
and 'do as we say, not as we do' until it has truly become a form of government, the spelling of the word is still 'hypocrisy'.

:)

19. It does seem that, since we have the opportunity and indeed the obligation
to use the word frequently, we might learn how to spell it. :P

7. You know, Johnny
when you drop bombs on people who have not attacked your country, they tend to get pissed off -- might even become your "enemy," if you catch my drift.

14. Lived in Egypt nearly 3 years, never heard a good word about him.
Edited on Sat May-17-08 12:40 PM by onager
And my Egyptian acquaintances range from well-educated engineers and teachers to illiterate fellahin (peasant farmers).

Here's a hint about how bad his press coverage is over here. And as the article notes, this is a government-controlled press. A couple of years ago, some brown-noser in the Egyptian People's Assembly (the lower legislative house) proposed a very strange bill: it would have jailed any journalist who "criticized a foreign head of state."

A few days later, an Egyptian journalist wrote an editorial about this and asked: "Would this mean we can no longer criticize Ehud Olmert?"

Subject edit: I've lived here almost 3 years, not 5. Brain implosion, sorry...

22. I've rarely heard a good word here, including the drug store cashier
who I didn't know. I said, "Save the plastic bag and oil wars," when I bought something and he said, "That damn Bush."

Typical exchange of pleasantries in America these days.

15. Blowback!
Ha-ha! Finally they are not getting away with crap, as they've been used to doing. Finally the Dems and other countries are calling them on their BS. They weren't expecting this--don't fully realize how the world and 75% of America has turned against them. Thought they could get away with this. Ha!

21. Bush lectures Arab world on political reform
<snip>

"President Bush lectured the Arab world Sunday about everything from political repression to the denial of women's rights but ran into Palestinian complaints he is favoring Israel in stalled Mideast peace talks. "Freedom and peace are within your grasp," Bush said despite scant signs of progress.

Winding up a five-day trip to the region, Bush took a strikingly tougher tone with Arab nations than he did with Israel in a speech Thursday to the Knesset. Israel received effusive praise from the president while Arab nations heard a litany of U.S. criticisms mixed with some compliments.

"Too often in the Middle East, politics has consisted of one leader in power and the opposition in jail," Bush said in a speech to 1,500 global policymakers and business leaders at this Red Sea beach resort. That was a clear reference to host Egypt, where main secular opposition figure Ayman Nour has been jailed and President Hosni Mubarak has led an authoritarian government since 1981.

"America is deeply concerned about the plight of political prisoners in this region, as well as democratic activists who are intimidated or repressed, newspapers and civil society organizations that are shut down and dissidents whose voices are stifled," Bush said.

"I call on all nations in this region to release their prisoners of conscience, open up their political debate and trust their people to chart their future," Bush said.

Scattered applause followed, with barely a ripple of reaction later to his declaration than Iran must not be allowed to obtain a nuclear weapon.

Bush headed back to Washington with little to show for the trip. Saudi Arabia rebuffed his plea for help with soaring oil prices, Egypt's leader questioned his seriousness about peacemaking and there was not enough progress in the peace talks to warrant a three-way meeting of Bush with Israeli and Palestinian leaders."
