Moore: `Fahrenheit 9/11' follow-up is not a sequel

2008-05-16 16:39:38
By DAVID GERMAIN AP Movie Writer

CANNES, France (AP) — With his follow-up to "Fahrenheit 9/11," Michael Moore wants to examine America as an empire, study its standing since the Sept. 11 attacks and present revelations to surprise audiences as much as the first film did. But he doesn't want to make a sequel. "To just say it's a sequel is so wrong," Moore told The Associated Press on Friday at the Cannes Film Festival, where he met with potential international distributors for the film, due out in 2009.

- snip -

"It would be easier and safer to make a sequel, if that's all it was, but this isn't about Bush. We all know this. Regardless of who the president is come November, we have a big mess, a big, big mess to be cleaned up, and I don't know whether it can be cleaned up," Moore said. "The toxicity of the spill may be so great that there's nothing we can do about it. If that's the case, where are we now as America and as Americans?"

- snip -

While Moore said the new film would go beyond Bush, he dropped strong hints that the president would remain in his sights. "Our biggest enemy that we should have been afraid of during these last eight years was perhaps an internal one, and I don't mean ourselves," Moore said. "I mean people that were up to absolutely no good when it came to what was best for this country and best for the world.

"It's my sincere hope that next Jan. 20, it's not just a transition taking place at the White House, where the U-Haul pulls up to take his stuff to Crawford (Texas). I think there should be a perp-walk coming out of the West Wing. The crimes that these people have committed go far beyond — and I'm not saying it on any kind of an emotional level or what my feelings are about Bush or whatever. I think there are very specific things that need to be looked at in terms of what they've done."

Further Explanation: Chris McGurk, chief executive officer of Overture, said the new film will be something of a culmination of Moore's previous work, which includes the General Motors tale "Roger & Me" and the Academy Award-winning gun-control documentary "Bowling for Columbine." "The country has sort of been rotting from within, and the culprits are big business, big corporations, kind of the conservative government," McGurk said. "`Bowling for Columbine,' `Sicko,' `Roger and Me' all could have been episodes inside the context of this film."

Just having an election to replace Bush doesn't begin to undo the damage that is still being done. America has traveled many miles down a terrible and dangerous road, and it hasn't begun to slow up or reverse course. All that has happened so far is that the passengers on this bus have recently become alarmed at the scenery-they don't know about the bridge out ahead and they didn't see the parts falling out onto the road in their wake.

Well, no one covers the doings of this crowd of evil doers better than Michael. Thanks to him and many others like him who have written, filmed and spoke non-stop about this administration, lots of this stench may some day have its proper airing in a court of law.

4. I so wish I could go back to pre-2000
that election opened up a can of worms that has resulted in me learning more about my government's actions over the last 50 years than I ever wanted to know. I hope Michael Moore's new film doesn't remind me too much. It's been kind of nice to have election 2008 to occupy my time for the last 6 + months.

5. Thank you again, Michael Moore. See you at the TC Film Festival this summer!
Can't wait to get back to Traverse City (Michigan, of course) this summer for the annual Film Festival that Michael Moore established.

Can't wait for this non-sequel, either!

10. K&R to a man not afraid to show us wrongs being committed in Iraq and here in the U.S.
I know Michael Moore will use his artistic temprament to deliver a film we should all see.

Just as Farenheit 911 was "more" than a movie, I know this new film of Michael's will be an experience we all need.

Uh, Mr. Germain, speak for yourself. No one here on DU was surprised by anything in Fahrenheit 911. We already knew everything Moore was laying out there and then some. It's only a "surprise" if you haven't been paying attention.

13. To be fair, The majority in the "audiences" were not paying attention.
There was much that was surprising to many Americans.

14. Some were, no doubt, surprised, and some
were outright dismissive of the film. I was speaking for those who were paying attention. Fahrenheit 911 was definitely a breath of fresh air, but I think Moore was pretty much preaching to the choir.

16. I wouldn't call DU representative of the average audience.
It surprised my parents - in a very good way.

They were already discovering how indoctrinated they had been by the evangelical church, how much that had never really asked the right questions, and how much they had been lied to by the republican party. That movie convinced these new democrats to become fired up angry activists - their anger at the deception and the lies of their party and church fueling their action.

21. Please don't!
I like Moore and I'm sure it'll be a good movie, but god damnit, I don't want him poking the right wingers with a stick this time. They're wonderfully depressed this election cycle and Michael Moore calling their hero and entire movement a sham (which it is) would just get them fired up almost as much as Hillary Clinton would have.

Moore should just let Obama do his thing and release his film AFTER the election.

a rightwinger is a criminal by a)innocent stooopidity or b)design. He's a horse thief, in the 1820 old west. Hang him, and he'll never steal our horses again ...'ignorance of da law no excuse etc...'
(the thieves already use EVERYTHING anyone not in cohoots with them, to try excite anger/rage/fears...rarely does pigmedia mention Mike's works w/out saying 'overwrought' and extremist etc- and that is a LIE! They are extremists, the bushit pigmedia! In many opinions, Mike is actually too moderate...)

24. MIHOP
I was kinda hoping he'd go for proving the "made it happen on purpose" theory, of which I'm all but certain. Someday, if this could ever be established as fact, this country would truly go nuts, in a good way.

27. At this point 9-11 is now part of history...

maybe more truth will come out some day, but in the meantime the Bush/McCain following is telling us what will happen if a Democrat is elected president. This is more of a threat than a warning, and we need to take on these bastards now. There is an entire political machine supporting the politics of fear and intimidation and we need to have it disassembled and destroyed once and for all.

28. i agree but...
I agree with everything you said, but it does nothing to refute my belief that establishing MIHOP would completely turn this country around. And soon we may have the resources to actually investigate it. They won't do it unless we make them, so no, I won't let it go and consider it to be part of history. That part of history is still an open book.

The anger the average Joe and Jane feels from 9/11 is huge. If they ever found out that their anger, directed at "arabs" and "terrorists", was misplaced, it would single-handedly end the military madness seething in the heart of the brain-washed masses. There's no way I can overstate this.

It would also legitimize revisiting other historical events, such as JFK, RFK, MLK, Diebold, BCCI, the 1980 October Surprise, everything would be possible. In the current context, such events are dismissed by many as far-fetched conspiracy theories. If the mother-of-all conspiracy theories could be confirmed (and the tracks are still fresh enough to do it, IMHO), the others suddenly look possible too, and could be examined anew without the maddening skepticism and dismissal we're so used to. Plus some of the same shadowy names and faces would be present throughout all of these events.

I'm not saying anything against Moore's new film, in fact I'm greatly looking forward to it, just saying I was hoping for MIHOP, since I think it brings down the whole house of cards.

29. Based on another post I read, you may get your wish in this new film...
I've become so jaded speculating about this web of conspiracies over the last several years that I didn't think too many people took the alleged connections between these events very seriously, or simply threw their hands in the air.

Welcome to DU, and I hope you also know about these people and their experiences:

31. jaded
Well, you'd have to be a fool if you weren't jaded. I've been following these issues since the early 80's, though not as closely as some on DU, but let's just say way too much of my spare time has been spent trying to get at some actual truth about a number of these events. It isn't easy, and the really frustrating thing is watching the mechanisms of denial and deceit from the powers that be (media and gov), it's enough to make a grown man cry.

9/11 is a rather unique opportunity (assuming it was what I think it was), we'll see what comes out, I'm skeptical of course that anyone will really be able to successfully navigate the issues and get their message believed, but it's not time to give up on it, to the contrary.

Thanks for the links, I'll check them out.
