KRAFT WOES: Layoffs, more changes in works?

Americans growing skeptical about artery-clogging cheese and other heart-unhealthy foods sent a chill through employees of Kraft Inc., who were hit by rumors of massive layoffs.

Wall Street analysts, who are well-wired with executives of Northfield-based Kraft and parent Altria Group, said the ax will fall on as many as 6,500 of Kraft's North American workers as early as Tuesday. That would be a substantial slice of payrolls at the nation's largest food company, which employs about 65,000 in North America and more than 100,000 worldwide.

<snip>

Roger Deromedi, who was named the lone chief executive at Kraft when Betsy Holden was demoted in December, announced a new management structure earlier this month that included the closing of a 1,000-employee office in Rye Brook, N.Y. He also created a group to further trim expenses.

What a dazzling recovery! I only can hope that * takes personal credit for this.

1. No doubt. This recovery is mahvalous. Everday you see more
and more people getting laid and the big news for December was a whopping 1,000 jobs created.

Net job loss for a president for the second time in History. Right? Hoover being the last?

5. If only the media would give it the deserved coverage. We may
be heading to a depression.

2. I suppose the jobs will go offshore, Cheese Whiz made in China
My wife bought some kind of fish the other day, Alaska Pollock. Upon examination, we discovered the label said 'product of China'. I don't know much about fish (learning now because of mad cow), but it seemed weird that North America would be importing food from China.

3. Sorry to hear this. Kraft is a customer of ours,
not a big one, since they only have a couple of our tiny machines in their pilot plants, but it looks like a wonderful place to work. Their Northbrook research facility is a very diverse place with respect to hiring -- it looks like the united nations in there. (Haven't been to Tarrytown yet, that's coming in February or March.)

7. Kraft's woes hit my family...
My sister was pretty high up in the company and her job was just eliminated. :( I would say it's been a good place to work at based on what she's said...and I'm just hoping she'll find another position and not have to take severence.

4. Kraft's parent company, Altria
is none other than the erstwhile Phillip Morris (ticker is still MO).

Killing us in more ways than one!

Guess they need to free up some cash for all those lawsuits. Bastards. :grr:

6. Do not disrupt my supply of Cheese Whiz
If they do then I'm moving to whipped cream cans without the cream.

Just kidding.
