Former USF students face new federal charges

TAMPA — A federal grand jury added more charges Wednesday against two Egyptian college students accused of carrying illegal explosives in their car in South Carolina last year.

Less than two weeks before their scheduled trial, federal prosecutors sought from the grand jury a new indictment charging former University of South Florida students Ahmed Abdellatif Sherif Mohamed, 26, and Youssef Samir Megahed, 21.

Lawsuit against former federal prosecutor remains alive
The Associated Press

DETROIT — A federal judge in Detroit has refused to dismiss a lawsuit brought against a former federal prosecutor in a 2003 terrorism trial.

The judge Wednesday also denied Karim Koubriti’s request to amend his initial complaint.

Koubriti filed a $9 million suit in August against Richard Convertino, who had won terrorism conspiracy convictions against Koubriti and another man. But government prosecutors later argued that Convertino hid evidence from defense attorneys in the trial.

The convictions were overturned in 2004. Convertino was indicted but later acquitted of obstruction of justice.

The Detroit News reports Koubriti claims Convertino and FBI Special Agent Michael Thomas violated his constitutional rights.
