Teen Charged in 2 Students' Deaths (UNC and Duke students)

A teen arrested in the death of a University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill student has also been charged in connection with the death of a Duke University graduate student.

Lawrence Alvin Lovette Jr., 17, was arrested Thursday morning and charged with murder in UNC Student Body President Eve Carson's death earlier this month. Authorities also charged him in connection with the January shooting death of Duke student Abhijit Mahato.

Durham police are now investigating whether Demario James Atwater, who was arrested Wednesday in Carson's death, is somehow involved with Mahato's killing.

Acting on a tip through the Durham County Sheriff's Office, heavily armed members of the Durham Police Department's Selective Enforcement Unit surrounded a house on Cook Road before dawn Thursday.

1. Eve Carson was from my town. The community is shocked and devastated.

Her father was one of my clients a number of years ago. Her parents and family must be in the depths of grief. She was a beautiful and accomplished young woman. :(

I hope justice will be served but nothing can bring her or the other student back.

Kind of scary that a thug will kill for what he can get out of your checking account. That they are so ignorant that they make no attempt to hide their face when they use your card. That they could have taken the card without killing. What a waste of air these two are.

5. whenever i watch one of those true crime stories on cable

i'm usually amazed at the stupidity of the criminals. basic stuff like disposing of the murder weapon or throwing away the sneakers that left blood-stained footprints all over the crime scene. mindblowing.

explain why both suspects were charged with Murder 1

6. When I did a DU archive search of Abhijit Mahato

the only references are from today.

Granted, Ms. Carson was the Student Body President; but I don't understand why her murder received national attention while Mr Mahato's was relegated to the Raleigh/Durham local news. Well, maybe I do understand; but I just don't want to believe it. :(
