Gillibrand (NY-20): Spitzer should resign if allegations are true
Source: The Post-Star

U.S. Rep. Kirsten Gillibrand, D-Greenport, on Tuesday said Gov. Eliot Spitzer should resign if allegations he was involved in a prostitution ring are true.

"This is very grave and sad news. My heart goes out to the governor’s family," Gillibrand said in a prepared statement. "If these serious allegations are true, the governor will have no choice but to resign."

Spitzer appeared with Gillibrand at various events during her 2006 congressional campaign.

Gillibrand would not be commenting beyond her prepared statement on Tuesday, because of the sensitivity of the situation, said Rachel McEneny, the congresswoman’s spokeswoman.

2. I'm with you. I think Spitzer should go...but all Dems should
say the following...

"If these allegations are true, Governor Spitzer should resign to repair the damage he has done to his family, his reputation, and the state of New York...just as I think Senators Larry Craig and David Vitter should step down for their hypocrisy."

7. Well there's a difference.
Craig and Vitter are Senators. Their jobs do not entail unifying a state. Their jobs do not require them to be the face of that state. Their jobs do not entail working with a rowdy bunch of Assemblymen and Senators and cleaning up the corruption in Albany.

15. You said governors represent their state and senators don't. That's ridiculous.
If anything, senators are even more high-profile than governors because they represent their state on the national level.

14. That is no license for hypocrisy on their parts
Both campaigned on strong family values so it is not all that different.

13. Wasn't Craig's case considered a misdemeanor though?
Not that I would ever defend him (Craig), but Spitzer's case is a felony. Not just prostitution, but transporting them accross state lines. Craig hinted at sex in a bathroom, which equals a fine. Spitzer DID have sex, supposidly multiple times, and transported them accross state lines. That equals jail time and a criminal record.

10. What?
He used tax money and public property to keep his mistresses happy. Even freepers must understand that this is illegal. Are you pissed that Mayor Combover got booted from the race?

6. She represents a swing district which went Republican four years ago
She has no intention of going down because of Spitzer's mistakes.

9. Spizer should say he'll resign as soon as Vitter and Craig do.
I don't remember Spitzer leading any moral crusade about someone else's private, life, the way Vitter and Craig did.
