Beale Air Force Base faces "very tough competition" in its bid to be headquarters for the Air Force Cyber Command, Rep. Wally Herger, R-Chico, said Tuesday.

In a telephone conference call after his meeting with Lord, the congressman talked to reporters. Herger said the number of bases in the running to be the Cyber Command headquarters has grown to 56. Originally, only eight or nine were being considered, he said.

If Beale were to be selected, that would be "an incredibly important advancement," Herger said Tuesday. It would apparently add 400 to 500 new jobs at the base.
In 2006, the Cyber Command was formed to guard against sabotage carried out through computers. The new command stands alongside the Air Force's Space Command and Air Combat Command.

The Cyber Command aims to protect such things as American communications, transportation and weapons systems from being attacked with computers, Herger said. Also, during a war, Cyber Command could use computers to attack such systems of the nation's enemies.
