Consumer Confidence at Lowest Level Since 9/11 Attacks

Consumer confidence in the United States has fallen to the lowest level since the 9/11 terrorist attacks.

The Rasmussen Consumer Index, which measures consumer confidence on a daily basis, fell two points on Wednesday to 81.7. That is the lowest level ever recorded by the Index which was created in October 2001. The Index has fallen eight points over the past week, fourteen points over the past three months, and thirty-eight points over the past year.

Prior to today, the all-time low was reached just before the start of the War in Iraq on March 11, 2003 at 83.2.

Women (73.4) are more pessimistic than men (90.5). Overall, just 17% of Americans now rate the economy as good or excellent. That view is held by 22% of men and just 13% of women.

Republicans (110.6) are much more optimistic than Democrats (63.3) or Independents (72.4). Overall, 9% of Americans believe the economy is getting better while 73% say it is getting worse. Sixteen percent (16%) of Republicans say the economy is getting better along with 4% of Democrats and 7% of those not affiliated with either major party.
