SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - Network computer maker Sun Microsystems Inc. is laying off 300 workers at its Northern California manufacturing plant, and will move those operations to plants in Oregon and Scotland, a company spokeswoman said Thursday.

The shift is a targeted one, the spokeswoman said, adding that, "There are no broad scale layoffs planned at this time."

The move will leave Sun, which has about 35,000 employees worldwide, with two manufacturing plants, the spokeswoman said. The vast majority of the California manufacturing operations are moving to Sun's Oregon plant, with the rest heading to Scotland.
