Plane carrying Georgian defense minister comes under fire in Iraq; no one injured
By Associated Press, 1/16/2004 03:14

TBILISI, Georgia (AP) A plane carrying the Georgian defense minister came under fire as it took off from Baghdad's airport to return to Georgia, the minister said Friday. No one was injured.

Defense Minister David Tevzadze said that American soldiers responded immediately and dispatched a helicopter after the plane came under fire after it took off Thursday evening. The shooting then stopped.

''I was sleeping at the time,'' Tevzadze said after arriving Friday in Tbilisi. ''I was only later told about the incident.''

Tevzadze spent two days in Iraq with Georgia's peacekeeping contingent.
