More Testing of Seafood to Address Mercury Concerns

A number of restaurants and retailers in different parts of the country have started testing the fish they sell in response to concerns about the amount of mercury in seafood, and the Environmental Protection Agency is beginning to examine the mercury content in fish sold in the New York City region.

The regional office of the federal agency, which began the study because the city found high levels of mercury in the blood of New Yorkers last spring, will examine the 20 most commonly eaten fish in the region, including tuna.

3. Honestly, I have had a metallic taste from tuna sushi in the past.

That's not honestly from mercury is it?

2. I ate at Mayflower a year ago and 2 hours later broke out into "goosebumps" on the under side of

both arms. It still remains to a lesser degree today...kind of fades and occasionally flares up a little. I wondered then if there wasn't something wrong because before I left the restaurant, I had to spend 20 minutes in the bathroom feeling quite ill after eating the trout. It tasted good, don't get me wrong...very good. But there seemed to be effects and I didn't have healthcare.

6. Trout? Most of that is "freshwater" and the fish are young and don't live long enough

to get Mercury in their fatty tissues. Maybe it was something else you ate with it? Most trout is "fish farmed" or managed. Sorry that happened to you. There's so much crap in our food supply it could have been whatever you ate that night with the trout.

4. Toro, the fattiest part of Bluefin tuna, is the lowest part of the fish's belly...

I wonder if the mercury settles there? It very often tastes quite metallic to me, like I put a penny in my mouth. Scary to think!
