Pelosi greeted with “Impeach” Bush and Cheney buttonsUpdated at 3:23 PM
Source: Reuters

U.S. House of Representatives Speaker Nancy Pelosi says she’s drawing heat from fellow Democratic lawmakers as well as people across the nation for refusing to move to impeach President George W. Bush or Vice President Dick Cheney.

“I go through airports, and people have buttons as if they knew I was coming,” Pelosi said with a smile, mimicking a protester pointing to an “Impeach” button on their chest.

But the California Democrat said she is sticking to her position that trying to remove Bush or Cheney would be divisive, and she added, most likely unsuccessful. If the House voted to impeach Bush and Cheney, a two-thirds vote would be needed in the closely divided Senate to oust them.

...

Speaking with reporters, she recalled that she wanted to focus on unifying the nation, passing the Democrats’ legislative agenda — not picking an impeachment fight with the White House.

“It was my belief that an impeachment of the Vice President or the President … would be very divisive in our country, and that is what I believed then,” Pelosi said. “It should have come to no surprise when I became Speaker I said it again, and I continue to hold that view.”

104. You choose to defend her???
She is the biggest disappointment in the Democratic Party as far as I am concerned. If Democrats lose it will rest on her shoulders entirely..She has turned off so many voters that many will not bother to even vote, if she is an example of what they would be voting for..

113. Pelosi is weak at carrying our message or building a movement
But I don't think any Speaker of the House could have managed to impeach bush and bring the troops home. The movement failed. Look at how few Democrats in Congress actually backed impeachment.

I am disappointed too, but calling Nancy Pelosi a bitch and all the other horrible things being said about Pelosi by a few dozen people at the Democratic Underground is wholly uncalled for. Thank you very much.

138. BorealAvenger, I do agree with you about the lack of consensus on impeachment
I guess I just wish she would have come out strongly on impeachment, pushed more investigations. Maybe I am wrong and that happened, I am not totally sure.
But she is, by no means, a bee-yotch. She has been a leader in other aspects.

I am disgusted that our soldiers are in harms way as we wait for someone to take the lead.

117. collection of Pelosi bashers
not to be confused with the pelosi worshippers, who think there is no need to address the outrages perpertrated by the bush cabal.

you just don't get it, do you?

if her lack of action is what we can expect from democratic leadership, then you can expect a lot of us to stay home. (unfortunately you smugly think we have no choice. ANOTHER major mistake on your/their part.)

yes, she has done a lot. like worked her way to the top as a (unmentionable so-called leadership group) lackey.

they, and their ilk, have been the destruction of this party. look at that last seven elections.

we won with bill clinton in 92, because people did indeed want change. we then suffered an immediate major defeat against the newts and karls, who so "bipartisanly" (yes, with the aid of some in our own party!) attacked clinton at every opportunity. it has only continued downhill, thanks to their insane modus operandi of repeating the same thing (let's take the high road, let's be bipartisan, let's all sing kumbaya) over and over again, and expecting a different result.

and with the supposed takeover by the democrats in 2006, you would expect at the very LEAST some symbolic action. but no, we are to busy being, again, "bipartisan", with a party who doesn't know the meaning of the word, to busy "picking our battles" and "keeping our powder dry" to do squat. and we have done just that, squat. you already hear the charges that we have had control since 2006, and done nothing.

the democratic party has a choice. they can address the outrages of the moran (sic) in the whitehouse, or see a mass exodus from the party.

you think we are nothing now? wait to the base leaves, or just stays home.

then whine.

It's great that Henry Waxman has been a bulldog going after the Bush Crime family, but then at the end of the day, what was the result? Every time I hear of another Waxman or Conyers investigation, I can imagine Dick Cheney doing imitations of someone Jerking off. I don't think Cheney Bush or the rest of the gang really losing sleep over this.

58. You call her nice when she talks despairingly about the homeless
When the Speaker complained about the war protesters on her sidewalk, she said that if they were homeless then they would simply be arrested but because they wear shirts that say "end the war" they can claim freedom of speech. I called her office and asked for clarification after I heard her say it. They noted my concern and said they would pass it along but had no comment. I wanted an explanation, none has come and I do not now expect one now.

The nice lady stuff is way too kind and a deception. "Good manners" and charm do not a nice lady make at least to me.

To proceed with the Impeachment article that Wexler is sponsoring, she is shirking her duty. And if it actually does come to a vote there, and is approved, if she then does not let it come to the House floor, she will be guilty of gross negligence, and no longer worthy of the job of Speaker.

All of those buttons and t-shirts ought to tell her something.

I was suckered again by the Democratic party. I thought my vote in the last election was a vote for change but it appears to be a vote for let's keep things the same way the were. BS! Impeach Pelosi and Reed; it is bad enough that our President and the Republican party have deceived us but for our own party to do this is too much to take. Impeach Bush, Cheney, Pelosi and Reed. Pelosi and Reed are guilty of not upholding our constitution and letting these war criminals continue their crime spree.

When I think of how many "firsts" have happened over the last eight years, it shames me at the choice of individuals for those "firsts". Let's see, Colin Powell, Condelezza Rice, Nancy Pelosi, and maybe Hillary Clinton. Just because you are the "first", does not mean that you are the best that could be found. There were more qualified people of color and also females who could have fit the bill and done a more honorable job than the aforementioned lot.

:swoon: :bateyelids: We gals have tried, but your post proves we shouldn't worry our pretty little heads about politics and stuff.

We'll just keep on letting the men run things, sigh, silly us thinking a woman could be in a position of power.

Back to the ironing board I go! MKJ

111. Divisive...now where have heard word before. IT'S MEANT TO BE
SOMEWHAT DIVISIVE and call those people out who are voting for someone based on gender or race instead of their qualifications and abilities. And there are many women out there voting for Hillary simply because she is a woman. That's stupidity at it's worst and risky for our country.

19. Imperial Speaker for the Imperial President
Could a greater egomaniac than Nancy Pelosi exist! Truly worthy of an honorary place in the Bush Crime Family. She, like Bush, thinks the entire nation is inconsequential in comparision to her imperial consciousness. Unfortanately, that is just what is happening...no one is taking her on. She mocks the thousands of voters she encounters in airports, sneers upon the letters, entreaties, phone calls and emails MILLIONS OF AMERICANS have been sending her for a year.

God that woman is odious. I have no great interest in Cindy Sheehan, but it would be fabulous if she gave her a run for her money.

I can't believe she let those words come out of her mouth.

Is she a Republican in Democrats clothing?
How can she dare to out down someone that has a right to protest!

How can anyone in her position dare to do that and laugh at the homeless!!!

I was thrilled when she was selected, thrilled.

The thrill is gone!

21. She really is clueless
isn't she? She has no idea of the depth of anger and suffering of the American people. She has no idea of the depth of suffering the US government has inflicted on others that are no military or economic threat to us (Haiti anyone?).
She doesn't care that the rest of the world sees us as some sort of war-mongering nut jobs that torture and slaughter just because we can.
Pelosi is beyond a disappointment. She is a traitor to the Constitution. By definition that makes her a traitor to her country.
Missing emails and documents, defiance of Congressional subpoenas. She doesn't think those things divide and hurt this nation?
This is beyond pitiful. This is treason.

You know too well that if the table were turned, and the Democrats were as criminal to the Constitution and the people of this country that the repugs would be burning fires outside the White House and burning effigies of the preznit and his whole damned family.

This Democratic leadership doesn't want to "divide the country"??? Are they in lala-land somewhere? They're pulling a "repug moment" on us.

How about exposing this corruption that HAS divided the country, and then we can heal for a change. Otherwise, it's just more deception, lying, stonewalling and wasting human life and treasure. Disgusting. Not funny at all pelosi. I see nothing funny.

in San Francisco. She's wealthy and powerful and a Washington insider. When protestors showed up on her doorstep, she publically wondered what the neighbors would think.

She's the perfect counterpart to Reid. A couple of "don't make waves" wusses "leading" a party that you'd never even know was in the majority unless you checked the numbers. It's pathetic.

86. As Speaker, "Conyers Unleashed." And In Congress...
...I'm suggesting someone out there try to draft Matt Gonzalez.

But any Pro-Impeachment candidate would get the "Lamonting" message across. And there's still 4 months until the primary there.

Taking out a single member of congress for cause, even a Speaker, is something the netroots should be able to manage easily.

PS: I don't understand why Cindy Sheehan isn't running in the primary (first).

44. Maybe divisiveness is sometimes a good thing.
di·vi·sive
adj.
Creating dissension or discord.

What's wrong with dissension when you're dissenting from someone who's wrong? Maybe we need a little divisiveness right now.

Sometimes using words like "divisive" is just a way of suppressing opposition. It's especially sickening when the ones being suppressed start using the word.

57. Oh well. It's not as if the Bush admin. has done anything that warrants impeachment
and the country can move beyond war crimes and forget they ever happened ...what's a little torture anyway? what's the lack of habeas corpus anyway? what's illegal detention anyway?
what's a little spying anyway?.... what did it hurt? They're just rights...who needs those?

and we all know how much the unitary executive has benefited America.

and the people of Iraq and Afghanistan are just sooooo grateful!

And everyone will love us again if we just pretend none of it ever happened and moved on...besides, the rest of the world is used to an America that pretends to be something it isn't.

The impression I am getting is that the Democrats (who are in the majority) can be bullied around by the republicans (who are in the minority).

74. The question for Pelosi
is no longer will you impeach but what is she hiding? Why is she protecting Bush/Cheney? She is clearly running cover for this rogue administration. Has she been threatened or is she in it up to her eyeballs? Will hers and many other democrats names surface as contributing to the crimes of this administration? Why does Conyers act like a pathetic scared child whenever this subject comes up as opposed to the fairly aggressive stance he had before Pelosi took control?

There is more than enough evidence to demand impeachment investigations. She is bound by the constitution to oversight and should be doing her duty to this nation rather than covering for the Bush/Cheney crime family. Just one more example of a government run amok...steeped in lies, cover ups, illegal wars, torture, spying on Americans, incompetence...the list goes on. And if you think the November are gonna change on god damned thing forget it. The fix is in. We are no longer a democracy...if we ever really were. Pelosi is just another crooked government official making sure those who are robbing Americans of their hard earned money continue to do so. Both parties are part of a corrupt, sleazy crime syndicate that has destroyed this nation.

FUCK. THEM. ALL.

75. The mistake in her thinking is that impeaching these bastards...
would have, most likely, actually unified our nation, not to mention improve the standing of the USA in world opinion. She failed to take advantage of one of the most patently agreeable actions that anyone in this country could have taken, in regards to the mess we have made in Iraq. The Re-thugs she works with, who still hang on to the notion that what was done during the past years of this miserable occupation were good for our democracy, are few, and those they represent are restless, embarrassed, and angry.

What better way to force her hand could she have been given?

The woman is complicit, that is the only way I read what she has (not) done.

I understand she rents an apartment in here district, but really lives in the Napa Valley. Kind of reminds me of Dickie boy living in Texass, but claiming Wyoming residence. Vote her out of office---good bye Bitch

77. Either do your job or get out Nancy
1 million people have died because of the war bush & Cheney lied to start.

Brewster Jennings the CIA "front company" that had Val Plame was rolled
up, God knows how many died, real WMDs get spread around the world,
and the White House destroyed evidence about their actions in this case
that was treasonous.

Dick Cheney's stocks have risen 3281% in the past few years thanx
to the war he lied to help start.

Big energy companies were allowed to write our nation's energy &
environmental laws and proceedures as global warming keeps getting
worse.

The Dept. of Justice has been turned into a branch of of the RNC to help
rig elections and Don Siegleman sits in jail.

The enron, Califorina Black-outs, and Gov. Arnie scam has never been
explained.

78. How disgusting this woman is. It's not what her personal feelings are.
I don't really care if she wants to tiptoe around and not step on toes. It's a matter of law. Can the Speaker be removed for incompetency?

79. The best way to unify the nation
would be to stop the illegal Bush junta by any means necessary. Since the junta refuses to supply any of the documents and evidence demanded by Congress, the only reasonable alternative is impeachment. Nancy's message is loud and clear: The Democratic leadership is either too chicken shit or up to their elbows in corruption to deal with the criminal cartel known as the Bush Administration.
And the treasonous Scooter Libby, Dick Cheney and Karl Rove are still at large.
It is understandable that all criminal prosecutions are on hold, as the Criminal-in-Chief will pardon everyone he possibly can upon leaving office, but impeachment puts the brakes on the continuing criminal enterprise now occupying the White House.

82. Whining "Too Divisive" Gets It Bassackwards. (As is usual in DC)
Impeachment is the ONLY way to unify our once-great nation.

We might risk "dividing" the war criminals from the Real Americans. Oh My!

Impeachment is our ONLY moral, patriotic option.

It IS our postive agenda.

89. She's feeling the pressure and the popularity of Impeachment, even if she's smiling.
Keep up the pressure, double it, wear more buttons, bump into her more often. She could change her mind. All it takes is one moment with a persuasive person, ideally a colleague, and she could flip. Don't give up yet.
