Navy helicopter crashes near Corpus Christi; 3 killed

CORPUS CHRISTI — Investigators were examining the wreckage today of a Navy helicopter that went down in a fiery crash near an antenna tower, killing three crew members and injuring another.

Authorities wouldn't confirm whether the MH-53 Sea Dragon smashed into the large red-and-white tower late Wednesday, but a large piece of burned-out wreckage could be seen at the tower's base. A local radio station reported its sister television station was knocked off the air because of damage to the tower.

Law enforcement officials shut down most traffic leading to the tower, which is surrounded by flat farmland.

Ed Mickley, a spokesman for the Naval Mine and Anti-Submarine Warfare Command, confirmed three of the crew members were killed. The injured crew member was taken to Christus Spohn Hospital Corpus Christi-Memorial and was listed in critical condition Thursday.
