FDA Warns of Botulism In Canned Green Beans
Source: Dbtechno

Boston (dbTechno) - The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has put out a warning to consumers about a potential Clostridium botulinum contamination in canned cut green beans from New Era Canning Company.

The green beans in question are labeled GFS Fancy Blue Lake Cut Green Beans.

They fear that C. botulinum would have already contaminated the canned green beans which come from the company in New Era, Michigan.

The bacterium can result in potentially fatal illness. There have yet to be any illnesses reported or connected to the contamination.

1. My mom used to fear this back in the 60's, and many a can went into the trash.
She was always paranoid of the lids being slightly swollen.

2. Buy Fresh, Frozen or better yet - Grow your own.
I gave up on canned vegetables ages ago. Loaded with salt, nutrients get lost, and god only knows what is leaching in to them from the can itself.

4. Frozen is actually cheaper by volume than canned.
Growing your own costs $1 + water for you and 4 neighbors for an entire year. We grow organically, so no additives or chemicals. You're then able to can or freeze your own from there.

8. Buy them in season, in bulk,
can your own and have them to eat throughout the year. You control the ingredients and the process. If you can't afford Mason or Ball jars, save your glass jars, and as long as they have a rubber seal on the inside that hasn't been damaged, they're fine to use.

11. I bought all my canning jars at garage sales and resale shops
Edited on Mon Jan-14-08 03:11 PM by Lone_Star_Dem
They cost a tiny fraction of what they do new and they still work great. I bought my presser canner at a charity auction for $5. It was brand new in the box.

Just tossing out another idea on how to make canning affordable.

12. I WISH I could find some of this stuff
at yard sales but so many people around here can that equipment is pretty few and far between other than from retail stores. I've also been doing this forever and, over the years, I've build up a good supply of all things pertaining to canning. And I just can't say enough about saving large relish/pickle jars. PERFECT for canning.

A pressure canner for $5.00??? I'm so jealous! I paid $100.00 for my 22-quart pressure canner/cooker.

13. Where I am many people used to can but not so many anymore.
The demographic here is quickly changing from retired country people to younger families looking to live out of the city. Which makes it a perfect place to stock up on supplies. A lot of the time I'd start chatting with a person at a garage sale and before I knew it they were bringing out more canning supplies they didn't really need anymore and tossing them in the deal. I have enough jars/rings now to put up my entire garden. Which is great because I always grow way too much and the neighbors will only take so much of my surplus veggies off my hands.

I also do jellies for gifts and home use. Even giving away as many as I have I still have a surplus of jelly jars. I fall into deals where I get an entire box for 50 cents quite often.

The canner was a great, great deal. It's the 23-quart Presto, and it should have been around the $100 that you paid for yours. I was going to pay more for the replacement seal for my old canner than what I ended up paying for the entire brand new canner. You just can't go wrong with a deal like that.

16. Checkout Craigslist, Freecycle & Goodwill/Salvation Army
You'd be amazed at the deals you can find, and what people will throw out.

19. go to a rural area and look for the jars in consignment stores
there's lots. On the other hand, these days you might spend more on gas to get the jars than the cost of the jars themselves.

Go figure.

7. Wow, dbTechno is running at glacial pace.
The January 14 "news bulletin" from dbTechno involves an FDA warning from December 21st.

Of course, it still applies.

17. Sooo - THAT'S why they taste like that!!!

Now kids everywhere have a GOOD EXCUSE!!!

Beans are sooo easy to grow - my mom & dad used to grow yellow and green bush and pole beans - I used to pick 'em and eat them when I passed by cutting the grass - along with the cherry tomatoes...used to grow green onions, carrots and parsely right into the winter...cleared away the snow to get them out...

My Grandmother had bunches of currents, too...

and our neighbor had a yard full of rhubarb that she almost would throw away until my mom almost fainted at the thought of such a great thing going to waste...others had sweet and sour cherry trees and green and yellow apple trees - the summer was busy - I had to first pick up all the apples that fell to the ground before I could cut the grass...I'm an expert apple, cherry and rhubarb pie maker to this day because of this!!!

18. On the plus side
They can just include syringes and remarket the tainted cans as DIY Home Botox kits.

Nicole Kidman can endorse it and it'll fly off the shelves.
