Martin will have to wait, PM says

John Manley's departure from the Liberal leadership race does not mean that the federal government will begin transferring power to presumed victor Paul Martin, the Prime Minister and several of his cabinet ministers said Wednesday.

With Mr. Martin's long-anticipated victory even more assured, some Liberals and opposition MPs questioned Tuesday whether Prime Minister Jean Chrétien can continue to govern effectively as members of Parliament increasingly look to Mr. Martin for leadership.

They suggested that there should be communication and consultation between Mr. Martin's camp and the government, since Mr. Martin is likely to be taking over.
