17. No surprise, I suppose
Given the widespread irrational hatred for Hillary (mostly by the right), it's no surprise that some poor soul has gone overboard. I think the only surprising thing is that something like this didn't happen sooner, even while Bill Clinton was in office. Personally, I think the hatred for Hillary stems for a deep-rooted sexism.

172. Man w/ semi-automatic shot at WH during Clinton years
On Oct. 29, 1994, Francisco Martin Duran, a convicted felon, fired at least 29 shots as he ran down the south sidewalk of Pennsylvania Avenue. Duran was tackled by passersby and restrained by the Secret Service while trying to reload his weapon. No one was injured - and Mr. Clinton, in the White House at the time, was never in danger. The gunman was sentenced to 40 years in federal prison.

The crazy Cessna pilot

On Sept. 12, 1994, a pilot died when he crashed a small plane on the South Lawn of the White House. Steering a Cessna tolen from a Maryland airport, Frank Eugene Corder, an unemployed truck driver and an unlicensed pilot, flew into the prohibited airspace over the White House in the wee hours of that morning. Corder was killed when he dove the Cessna toward the mansion, crashing it on the South Lawn. His plane hit a tree on the steps of the South Portico, as well as a first-floor corner of the White House. President Clinton and his family were not in the mansion at the time.

Unidentified gunman shot into Clinton WH

In December 1994 alone, the White House saw five incidents. Four of them involved breaches (or would-be breaches) of the mansion's grounds, ranging from fence jumping to a homeless man waving a knife on a sidewalk outside the White House. (That man was shot by police and later died of his injuries.) Then, on Dec. 17, an unidentified person fired at least four bullets at the White House. One went through a dining room window, while others hit near the president's bedroom window on the second floor. No one was injured, but the case is still unsolved.

There were many more dangerous nutjobs attacking during the Clinton WH years...

18. Updated at MSNBC:Woman who said she was freed: 'He showed us a bomb'
Edited on Fri Nov-30-07 02:17 PM by cal04
A man took an unknown number of people hostage at a New Hampshire campaign office for Democratic presidential hopeful Sen. Hillary Clinton, police said Friday.

The man claimed to have a bomb strapped to him when he walked into the office in Rochester, WHDH-TV reported.

WMUR-TV quoted a woman, Lettie Tzizik, saying she spoke to someone who said she had just been released by the man.

"A young woman with a 6-month- or 8-month-old infant came rushing into the store just in tears, and she said, 'You need to call 911. A man has just walked into the Clinton office, opened his coat and showed us a bomb strapped to his chest with duct tape,'" Tzizik said.

Police surrounded the building, evacuated the immediate area and placed other buildings, including a nearby school, under lockdown.

24. Hostages Held by Armed Man at Clinton Office
Edited on Fri Nov-30-07 02:10 PM by texastoast
Source: KPRC 2 Houston

An armed man, possibly with a bomb, has taken people hostage at Hillary Clinton's campaign office in Rochester, N.H.

Police said a man in his 40s, with salt-and-pepper hair, is in the building and has what appears to be an explosive device strapped to his body, TV station WMUR reported.

Witness Lettie Tzizik told the station that she spoke to a woman shortly after she was released from the office by the alleged hostage-taker.

"A young woman with a 6-month or 8-mont-old infant came rushing into the store just in tears, and she said, 'You need to call 911. A man has just walked into the Clinton office, opened his coat and showed us a bomb strapped to his chest with duct tape."

133. Heh...even Greenpeace and PETA are listed as "terr'ist"
Yet no right-leaning groups, even with a history of domestic violence against US citizens on our soil, are considered domestic threats.

Doesn't have to be a GOP campaign office. Somehow someone thinks a bunch of people protesting animal cruelty/enviornmental exploitation/etc. on a street corner are more dangerous than the nuts who McVeigh used to hang around with.

Feel safer?

Admittedly I didn't look through the whole thread, but it was still something I had to look for in order to find. Sadly I actually do think that the Clinton name rouses something ugly in right-wingers enough to do this kind-of stuff, but we can't let them change our minds based on that.

55. Clinton cancels DNC speech
Edited on Fri Nov-30-07 02:35 PM by RamboLiberal
Hillary Clinton has canceled her speech before the Democratic National Committee as a result of the developments at her New Hampshire office, DNC Chairman Howard Dean announced.

“Unfortunately as some of you know, there is a hostage situation in New Hampshire involving a Clinton campaign staff person," he said. "The details are sketchy at this time, but understandably Senator Clinton is now dealing with this very difficult problem and she is not going to be able to join us today. And we will keep them in our prayers and hope for a resolution to this situation in New Hampshire.”

http://politicalticker.blogs.cnn.com/

Workers for Sen. Barack Obama's campaign office in Rochester also were evacuated, a campaign spokesman said. The office is four doors away from Clinton's. Staffers in John Edwards' office, a few buildings away, evacuated as well.

69. Sure, but...
There are lots of such people and the psychology is such that they tend to fixate on something. Hillary has been demonised by the right to such an extent that she's now viewed as something akin to Satan (and not the version I worship, the bad one). Combine that level of demonisation with, for example, any number of people with untreated mental issues and you have a recipe for disaster.

Like some of the other posters, I hesitate to jump to any conclusions, but I can't help but wonder if the guy might be someone who listens to right wing talk radio and has fixated on Senator Clinton. With a few notable exceptions (like the Unabomber) you generally don't see a lot of leftists in the United States anymore who are into violence and threatening people with explosives.

I just hope that everything ends without the cops having to go in after the guy. We'll never know what was going on in his head if they kill him, and I don't want to see anyone - hostages, bystanders, police, anyone - get hurt.

161. Actually, the Unabomber wasn't even a Leftist
Several years ago, some Bushie Asshole made that insinuation to me. As we KNOW most all the Bushies lie or simply repeat lies they have heard without checkling to see if they are true first, I decided to check.

I read part of the Unabomber manifesto. That was some sick puppy who hated everyone with equal opportunity. Of course, the Bushie Asshole was lying or just repeating a lie he'd heard from his Bushie Asshole Masters without checking, as they do so very very VERY often.

When the Unambomber was bashing the Liberal Left, he sounds like a Freeper. When he bashes the Bushie Right, he sounds like a hardcore Communist. Rantings everywhere. Hatred for EVERYONE, without exception.

Don't believe me? Then read.

http://www.thecourier.com/manifest.htm

But this I can say with 100% certainty, and it will become clear as you peruse Nutsy's Manifesto, he was no Leftie.

It's possible he was trying to get his the attention of his family? Who knows?

They're saying he has a history of mental illness, perhaps in his mind he thought he'd find the Senator there and get a chance to make his case?

126. Can we PLEASE avoid blaming people or groups for this?
The news is reporting that this person may have a history of mental health issues. Blaming this on any particular group of people or point of view at this moment is inappropriate, premature, and insulting. Don't make us look like a bunch of paranoids with prejudices.

140. I doubt most mean to be laying blame
It's more that in a situation such as this people look for a reason. To think that there's a chance that he may be acting as he is due to a mental illness that isn't being properly treated is easier to understand than all the other reasons why a person may decide to do something such as this.

However, you're right. Just because he has a history of mental illness doesn't mean that's the reason he's acted the way he has today. I do hope for his sake it is though.

151. The man is characterized as a Libertarian who distrusted the government...

if you want to blame a "group", it is the same mindset as McVeigh or the Waco cult members. I think there is a deeper sociological issue where the government is not forthcoming in its investigations, such as in the 9-11 commission report, which is stirring up a lot of paranoia and conspiracy theories. It really comes to a head in situations like this.

No sense trying to hide from it. It happened when Clinton was in the WH and it will happen again when the next Dem wins.

The GOP and right wing media know very well the danger of using propaganda 24/7 to stir up hate among those who are paranoid and not inclined to think for themselves, but they do it anyway.

141. Local news coverage a bit ahead of national news
The local station (channel 9 WMUR) seems to be slightly ahead of the cable news. I noticed Fox was splashing the suspects's name over the airwaves, other channels have been more restrained.

Allegedly the suspect is reported to have told one of his relatives to "watch the news today."

Hope everything turns out O.K.

saying his dad had been drinking for 2 days straight. before leaving, he told his son to "watch the news."

someone on the radio also claimed that the bomb, is actually road flares strapped to his body.

the radio also just said that the last hostage was released.. but on Wolfie's show, they're saying there's still hostages?

this reminds me of 9-11 and the stories and misinformation coming from everywhere.

174. Let's Face the Facts:
Edited on Fri Nov-30-07 06:13 PM by proudmoddemo
This is a relatively common event. It has happened in the past; it happened today, and it'll probably happen in the future. Part of being involved in politics is a certain amount of risk--and that risk is less than the risk you taken when you strap yourself into a car. There are people that are mentally ill. They get offended by the stupidest things; they send death threats. It happens to most national figures. Senator Clinton is no different.

However, look at our reaction to this. It was a guy with road flares for God's sake. He was of danger to no one but himself. He was a mentally ill person on some loony quest for fame and/or some irrational quest to change policy. This has been going on since John Wilkes Booth.

But look at how we reacted to it. It was 9-11 all over again. Campaign offices in Iowa closed. Candidates for office canceled their speeches. Cable news went on and on for hours about a guy with road flares strapped to his chest. The guy got the attention he wanted. And the other fruitcakes that have drank for 3 days straight will surely follow. After all, the democratic process was stopped by a crazy guy with road flares strapped to his chest.

A guy with road flares strapped to his chest is not a danger to Senator Clinton, her staffers, and least of all the nation. I can see local TV covering this. But this doesn't rise to the level of a terribly serious event. This happens all the time--in 7-Elevens, gas stations and other places. That doesn't get attention. This did--this did because, since 9-11, we automatically think the worst case scenario. And that is a very scary thing. Far scarier than this.

(For the record, I have received weird phone calls from crazy people that didn't like a candidate I was working for. Nothing ever came of it. I am sure it was scary for those involved. But life, and the democratic process, goes on. I hope that no one, including the hostage taker, is injured in this).

185. Breaking News: Hostage Taking At Clinton NH Campaign Office
Source: 365Gay.com

(Rochester, New Hampshire) A mentally unstable man wearing what appeared to be a bomb strapped to his chest walked into a Hillary Rodham Clinton campaign office Friday, took hostages and demanded to speak to the candidate in a standoff that dragged into the night, authorities said.

The man released at least three hostages, but was still holding one person at nightfall, nearly five hours after the ordeal began, according to a law enforcement source who spoke to The Associated Press on the condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak about the situation.

Clinton was in the Washington area at the time, but the confrontation brought her campaign to a standstill just five weeks before the New Hampshire primary, one of the first tests of the presidential campaign season. She canceled all appearances, as did her husband, and the security around her was increased as a precaution.

Thankfully the situation ended yesterday with no one getting hurt.

I wanted to see the place, so I walked by it today - it's next town over for me. You couldn't imagine a more typical New England main street, BTW. All quiet, Clinton office closed with a police car opposite it, a couple of news media unhurriedly talking videos of the officefront.
