Saudi gang rape victim sentence 'unjust'

A lawyer for a gang-rape victim in Saudi Arabia who was sentenced to 200 lashes and six-months in jail says the punishment contravenes Islamic law.

The woman was initially punished for violating laws on segregation of the sexes - she was in an unrelated man's car at the time of the attack.

When she appealed, judges doubled her sentence, saying she had been trying to use the media to influence them.

Her lawyer has been suspended from the case and faces a disciplinary session.

Abdel Rahman al-Lahem told the BBC Arabic Service that the sentence was in violation of Islamic law:

"My client is the victim of this abhorrent crime. I believe her sentence contravenes the Islamic Sharia law and violates the pertinent international conventions," he said. ...

And yet we have amongst us those who defend these barbarians! I speak of the touchy-feely idiots who refuse to see reality. Islam is a religion it is not a 'nice' religion. Strict adherrants to Islam are not 'nice' cuddly people just yearning to come and give you a hug. They are religious zealots, no less loathesome than christian zealots or jewish zealots. But one aspect that makes the Islam world a greater immediate threat...the 'moderate' muslim does not loudly decry these acts in general, if they say anything at all it is in the particular case.

Face up to the reality of what I am saying, sit down with reality on the table and maybe, just maybe some sort of accord can be worked out between the closet moderate muslims and moderates pragmatists from the other cultures on this planet. If that cannot be accomplished then isolation of the muslim world until such time as the religion leaves its adolescence and reaches maturity will be the only reasonable course for the rest of the world.

Bigot! I can hear the screams now. Misanthrope! Screams the erudite. Hate-monger! ad nauseum. Bit the facts remain, and the facts keep killing innocent children...I can live and sleep with my views on this issue...the question is? Can you?

1. I agree that the Saudi version of Islamic law is horrendous

I don't like the idea of painting all of Islam with such a broad brush, however.
And BTW, I'm an atheist, I have no dog in this hunt.
