Massachusetts moves to protect abortion clinics

Tue Nov 13, 2007 5:50pm EST
By Jason Szep

BOSTON (Reuters) - Massachusetts enacted the toughest restrictions in the United States on protesters at abortion clinics on Tuesday with a law that forces them to stay 35 feet away.

The law signed by Gov. Deval Patrick takes immediate effect and expands on legislation from 2000 that sought to keep protesters 6 feet from a patient within an 18-foot (5.4-metre) zone outside the state's 10 clinics that perform abortions.

The state government said in a statement that the old law, especially the 6-foot rule, had proven difficult to enforce.

"By widening the buffer zone around reproductive clinics, we will protect patients from the harassment that so many have encountered as they seek care," said Patrick, a Democrat.

1. Governor Patrick should be
Applauded....we know how scary and murderous some of the pro-Life crowd can get, witness the John Salvo nutter several years ago.

Some of the pro-Life crowd obviously just have no manners and they're way too obsessed, the fact is, they have NO RIGHT to harrass doctors, nurses or women going into abortion clinics....it's none of their damn business.

3. Still not far enough
Many years ago I volunteered as a escort at a clinic. What I saw would make your blood curl. One morning I arrived at the clinic to find the staff cleaning up hundreds of dead rats all over the porch. Every time I went to the clinic to volunteer something had happened. Fortunately there were some "big guy" volunteers otherwise I don't know if I could have withstood it. The doctor had been harrassed and threatened and followed. I was followed home once, but luckily I reconized the people in the car and detoured for a long shopping trip. It was an experience I will never, ever forget. Now that I have kids I would not risk it because I learned very quickly that these people are lunatics.

6. They are crazy and they are Cowards
A perfect opportunity to go in the military and save democracy and freedom in Iraq-Nam awaits them and YET they won't volunteer for that

They would rather hassle some poor 17 year old rape victim getting treatment.

7. This is part of the reason why I am pro-gun.
I want to protect myself from the hard-right wing. It's not just this issue, but they are racists too. They hate to see anyone a tone darker than David Duke's pale lilly white ass. I have a neighbor (Greek) who was treated quite badly by some skinhead delivery person from Enfield, CT. The delivery hick thought he was a Muslim. :eyes: And if he was, so what?
