Bomb Iran, majority of Americans says in new poll
Source: Raw Story

Despite President Bush's perpetually abysmal approval ratings, his increasingly hostile rhetoric against Iran has drummed up enough fear of a "nuclear holocost" or a World War III that a majority of Americans are in favor of a US strike against the country aimed a curtailing its apparent nuclear ambitions, a new poll shows.

The Zogby International survey shows 52 percent of Americans would support a strike on Iran, while 53 percent expect President Bush to launch such an attack before the end of his second term. Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton is voters' No. 1 choice to deal with Iran, with 21 percent saying they would like to see her take on Tehran from the White House. Republican Rudy Giuliani was voters' second choice, with 15 percent.

Just 29 percent of Americans think the US should not attack Iran, with one in five people unsure about military action. Of those who would support a strike, 28 percent believe military action should wait until the next president is in office, while 23 percent want to see Bush let lose US missiles against Iran.

. . .

"It is utterly stunning that, after the great difficulties we have clearly faced in Iraq (a situation far from finished, by the way), that an absolute majority would favor a strike on Iran at this time," writes Dr. Steven Taylor at PoliBlog. "Even if we assume that the die-hard 25%-30% who still approve of the way the President is doing his job also are in favor of such a strike, where do the other 27%-22% come from to get the pro-strike total to 52%?"

Check out the exit polls,2000 and 2004, which show religious affiliation. Bush got the majority of the organized religious vote. Woo woo prediction says the battle of Armageddon is coming. When these stupid predictions cause Innocent people to die it's time to make spreading that crap illegal. Making fun of it needs to be manditory. IMO

19. You cannot live inside Nazi Germany or Imperial Ameika and not be affected at least a little
by the 24/7 lies, hypocrisy, fraud, theft, murder and tyranny.

Obviously, Nazi Tyranny was much more overt and violent. It doesn't need to be in Amerika 2007, so it isn't.

I don't care how smart or with-it a person is, there is simply no way to flush 100% from our minds. It is designed, like all effective advertising, to work at the suconscious level and create false realities where an implanted itch is "scratched" with the product being sold, in this case Kinder and Genlter Nazism, BushPutinism, or whatever we wish to call the New Totalitarianism until historians give it a name some decades from now.

Not you not me not anyone.

And yes, there can no longer be any doubt that a sizeable minority, if not a large majority, WANTED what Hitler was dishing out, and what Bushler is dishing out even today.

145. Actually, Zogby is probbaly the best among the pollsters in terms of reliability
and believability of results.

Zogby has been around quite awhile and you have just missed their existance, it is not that they are a fly-by-night organization or anything.

In the Soviet Union or Imperial Amerika, both so very much with lies as part as their core soul, it is difficult to know what is true and what is half-truth (with certain key aspects removed so as to lead the herd to a predetermined consensus).

I sympathize. And of course, you have to analyze and make your own decisions. But it is my opinion that you are on the wrong track here. Zogby has been around for at least a decade and, among other things, ws the only pollster to predict, correctly, that Gore would win the popular vote in 2000.

It is possible Zogby has been deceived in some way, the Bushies created False Reality Bubbles like you and I shit daily, so it is possibly. It is also possible that Zogby, wittingly or unwittingly (by virtue of Bushie moles and infiltrators) is part and parcel of the Bush Lie Machine.

But I do not believe that to be so.

147. Mencken would agree
It took just eight decades but H.L. Mencken's astute prediction on the future course of American presidential politics and the electorate's taste in candidates came true:

On July 26, 1920, the acerbic and cranky scribe wrote in The Baltimore Sun: " . . . all the odds are on the man who is, intrinsically, the most devious and mediocre the man who can most easily (and) adeptly disperse the notion that his mind is a virtual vacuum. The presidency tends, year by year, to go to such men. As democracy is perfected, the office represents, more closely, the inner soul of the people. We move toward a lofty ideal. On some great and glorious day, the plain folks of the land will reach their heart's desire at last, and the White House will be adorned by a downright moron."

9. i'm sick to my stomach
i didn't believe it. So i went to the Zogby site to see for myself. They interviewed 1028 people, and asked 59 questions.

http://www.zogby.com/news/ReadNews.dbm?ID=1379
Released: October 29, 2007

A majority of likely voters 52% would support a U.S. military strike to prevent Iran from building a nuclear weapon, and 53% believe it is likely that the U.S. will be involved in a military strike against Iran before the next presidential election, a new Zogby America telephone poll shows.

The survey results come at a time of increasing U.S. scrutiny of Iran. According to reports from the Associated Press, earlier this month Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice accused Iran of "lying" about the aim of its nuclear program and Vice President Dick Cheney has raised the prospect of "serious consequences" if the U.S. were to discover Iran was attempting to devolop a nuclear weapon. Last week, the Bush administration also announced new sanctions against Iran.

Democrats (63%) are most likely to believe a U.S. military strike against Iran could take place in the relatively near future, but independents (51%) and Republicans (44%) are less likely to agree. Republicans, however, are much more likely to be supportive of a strike (71%), than Democrats (41%) or independents (44%). Younger likely voters are more likely than those who are older to say a strike is likely to happen before the election and women (58%) are more likely than men (48%) to say the same but there is little difference in support for a U.S. strike against Iran among these groups.

84. Ever watch the TV game show - Family Feud?
it goes like this, "We surveyed 600 people with the following question..."
I think they ask the same 600 people for every question.

I really think with matters of war and peace the pollsters keep data on positive and negative opinions. On this poll they very well could have used this type of data.

Unfortunately for a least a year I've noticed 'Bad... Bad..Baaaad Iran' threads here on DU. It's a Bush wet dream with the amount of propaganda on Iran for web surfers.

And why not? The Bushies are using essentially the same propaganda techniques begun by Bernays and advanced by Goebels. Why wouldn't the results produce very similar mindsets, mildly different because overt racism and brutal violence would not be accepted, from a PR and marketing standpoint, in this version of rebranding.

Red State, Little Green Footballs, CNSNews, etal as a linked source here at DU. In a little while AP/UPI will pick up the story but they are so far out of the loop why wait for them.

Raw Story has 90% great investigative work and 10% titillating stories to draw in readers. Opposite of any newsroom mainstream so called media runs.

Raw story is not a "news source" any more than DU is a "news source". A "news source" is a person/organization who has investigated, researched, written, reviewed, edited, and then published information WITHOUT applying a filter of "stories we think most intriguing" (as per Raw Story's website).

31. Raw Story does investigate, research, write, review and edit
and about the nonsense of applying filters:

Raw Story says up front it publishes those stories it thinks are most interesting. Each and every newspaper, channel, news site only publishes those stories it feels are most interesting, however they lie and say they cover all the news "fit to print". If the other news sites printed all the news fit to print, the American public would not be the least informed population of the Third World.

I no longer trust anything that comes from the mainstream media even Zogby. They could be bought or forced into lying about this. This assministration is like the Mafia and anyone who disagrees with them are doomed. The only idiots who think we should bomb Iran that I have been in contact with are rethuglicans. They are dumb enough not to realize the consequences of bombing Iran. They have no clue that China and Russia (Which are big according to Bush) are not going to just let us bomb Iran with no retaliation against us. And even if China and Russia don't retaliate we still should NOT bomb Iran

76. Sadly, it doesn't matter if it is true or not
what matters is that it is now out there to spin and build support for and against war. People still think there are WMD's in Iraq. The RW splashes the lies and the deceptions and leave it up to other news agancies to retract the story. So people watching fox never see the retraction and Fox News says, hey it was retracted in other media, we don't need to. If people don't read and use the tv remote to see other possibilities then the lies are as real as the truth.

29. The question asked is more than a bit of a push.
6. Based on what you know about Iran's development of a nuclear program, how
supportive are you of a U.S. military strike to prevent Iran from building a nuclear weapon?

The first four question are not even listed http://www.zogby.com/wf-Zogby-10-29-07.pdf

The framing of this question and the surrounding questions push an assumption that Iran is building a nuclear weapon.

74. Does it push that assumption?
Edited on Tue Oct-30-07 01:49 PM by fjc
I mean, the first part of the question is the assumption, "based on what you know". What does anyone out here or in the general public know but what they hear the talking heads of media and government say? And what are the they for the most part saying? They're telling us we have a good deal to fear from the prospect of Iran getting the bomb, and they're telling we cannot trust what Iran says about their intentions. Take a poll here. Does anyone out here believe either of these is untrue? The last part of the question is where the rubber meets the road. To me, it merely states that if it is true they want and are preparing a bomb, would you support a military strike to stop it? In the context of what we're hearing on the airwaves from just about every responsible party, I'm not a bit surprised at the results, as disheartening that they are.

90. let me explain
The question should have been phrased without any additional information, as in:

"Are you in favor of a military strike on Iran?"

Do you see how that eliminates any prejudicial information? How it is a neutral, isolated, framing of the question asked? Everytime a poll adds additional information to a question, such as this one did, red flags should go up and you need to step back and ask what purpose the additional information provided served.

From PollingReport.com, recent polls on the subject of Iran:

http://www.pollingreport.com/iran.htm

Some examples:

CNN Oct. 12-14 2007:
If the U.S. government decides to take military action in Iran, would you favor or oppose it?
Oppose 68
Favor 29

CBS News/New York Times Poll. Sept. 4-8, 2007
Which comes closer to your opinion? Iran is a threat to the United States that requires military action now. Iran is a threat that can be contained with diplomacy now. OR, Iran is not a threat to the United States at this time
Military Action Now 9
Diplomac Now 59
Not a Threat 24
Unsure 8

And many more

Zogby poll seems QUITE INACCURATE!!

edit to add: Also, variation between polls shows that question wording has a huge effect on results. It is probably more meaningful to look at trends over time of responses to the same question from the same pollster, than to focus on a single, anomalous, poll.
Personally, it appears much more likely to me that Americans are strongly OPPOSED to military action in Iran at this time, and growing more so.

He's a voice of reason on it. In a speech he gave he spoke of how if we have an attack
on Iran of any size, our troops are sitting ducks, totally stressed out...and nearly wiped
out already in that Iraqi quagmire. Iran has the capacity to not only sink several of the
US ships nearby, but raze our soldiers in Iraq in massive numbers. Don't like 3,000 dead
- how bout 30,000! Or many more. To a point that we can't even rely on military due to
the loss. Can't have a draft. Meanwhile, to plan, Blackwater is outta Iraq and here w/us
in the US, ready to lock up the near 50% who don't want to bomb Iran if they disgaree.

Private armies, guided by the root of all evil, money. Bringing the war home and doing it
to us here instead of them over there (sound familiar?) This is huge. The vast majority
of those supporting bombing likely are pro-keep the troops there folk. Many may have
kids there now. This message must be delivered. It's their kids who will die, or there
will be a lot fewer troops to support after Iran fires back. Oh, and you know they'll
send non-nuclear fire into Israel who will fire back with nukes with our blessings &
likely support. And Bush will have his little WW3 & military rule here to boot. It is
not looking good. They better seal the fucking Canadian border if we participate
in any kinda nuke dropping in the Middle East as I'll no longer be a US citizen...

It's all about how the questions are asked, and who is being asked. They ask something like "Would you be willing to bomb Iran if found out that were going to use a nuclear weapon against Israel or an American ally or the US?" Or they ask a series of questions that lead to that conclusion.

Only idiots would say no under those circumstances, At this point the 'majority' of Americans know better. The dead giveaway is that it simply isn't consistent with the polls that show Bush's tanked reputation practically in the negative numbers and all the other polls that show the American people are waking up. And Zogby is just as biased as any other poll, name recognition not-withstanding.

And poll results like these are only published if they promote the Bushco party line. Otherwise it stays secret.

86. This survey is totally worthless, for several reasons...
Edited on Tue Oct-30-07 02:23 PM by Up2Late
First, the conclusion they are drawing is to a hypothetical situation,
"...52% - would support a U.S. military strike to prevent Iran from building a nuclear weapon..."

The question is based on the ASSUMPTION that Iran IS actually BUILDING a nuclear weapon, currently they are NOT. Currently, they don't even have "the knowledge" of how to build one, let alone, have the parts and nuclear material to make one. The really scary thing is, *Bush, in his "...you don't want WWIII..." speech, drastically lowered the bar to "...preventing Iran from gaining 'the knowledge' needed to build a nuclear weapon..."

Second, Check out the "Margin of Error!" 3.2%!!!
That means it really is 48.8% to 55.2%, so it could be as low as 48.8%, but could be as high as 55.2% (which is kind of scary) but then we come to point Three!

Three, the calls are all made to:

1) Land-lines (NO Cell Phones, so few "younger voters")

2) People who will probably don't screen their calls or have Caller ID. Anyone here fall into that category, that you will still pick up any and all phone calls?

3) The survey was

59 questions!!! "...approximately? 59 questions?"

I don't know about you, but if Zogby called and told me ahead of time the poll was 59 questions, I'd say, "No Thanks!" And if they did NOT tell me ahead of time that it was 59 questions, I'm sure I'd tune-out and probably stop listening to what the interviewer was asking after about the first 30 questions!

Anyone here ever paid full attention though ALL 59 questions from a telephone interviewer!?!? Just the thought of it makes me think the movie "Airplane," where Robert Hays' character starts telling his life stories in "flash-backs", but when you come back to the present, the person has killed themselves!

Surveys like this are Crap!

The Zogby Methodology is below:

Released: October 29, 2007

Survey Methodology (Zogby America Likely Voters) 10/24/07 thru 10/27/07

Zogby International conducted a telephone survey of (likely voters).

The target sample is <1028> interviews with approximately <59> questions asked. Samples are randomly drawn from telephone cds of national listed sample. Zogby International surveys employ sampling strategies in which selection probabilities are proportional to population size within area codes and exchanges. Up to six calls are made to reach a sampled phone number. Cooperation rates are calculated using one of AAPORs approved methodologies<1> and are comparable to other professional public-opinion surveys conducted using similar sampling strategies.<2> Weighting by is used to adjust for non-response. The margin of error is +/- 3.2 percentage points. Margins of error are higher in sub-groups.

Zogby Internationals sampling and weighting procedures also have been validated through its political polling: more than 95% of the firms polls have come within 1% of actual election-day outcomes.

If US are to attack Iran, over the same false claims they have used against Iraq, then you are really out in the woods.. Really, absolutely out in the woods...

But then, even that IAEA have claimed that they have _no_ prove to say Iran are in the prosess of producing Nuclear Weapon is not been innformed to the american public..

So I guess, US are on the road to war - again, and this time mr Bush are catable of using nucks.. And If US are going to attack Iran, they wil be werry alone.. Not even the Brittish are going to walk the road down to a hopeless war in Iran, as they are doing it in Iraq..

Maybee a war with Iran, Iraq and a lot of other places are the start of the end of USA as a superpower..? All "superpowers" in the history, have at some point in their history been to aggresive, and have started a war, they cant win... If US are going to war with Iran, withouth a DAM GOD REASON the rest of the world wil go against US.. Maybee not military, but with the debt burden US have today, we can wage war agains the old US without a patron been used.. Just trow enough dollar in the bin,and not paying american products.. The most of US technology can be build oter places.. Even rocket tecknology are not the domain of US soley anymore.. Even the Chinese have some "interestning" in the making.. And Your Titan V Rockets, are using a 30 year old USSR product.. The rocket engines is a derative of a sovjet product from the 1970s.. In fact the russians are getting alot of free repotation, becouse of the Titan V rockets.. (the sivilians one, not the military one)...

I fear that if USA are going to war in Iran, they wil face a enemy they just dosent know how to defeat.. Yes you can bomb the fasilitetes to smal pieces but you cannot win the "heart and mind" as the US was trying in Iraq, with blowning up building over the whole places.. If US are going to to war, then United States of America wil face the rest of the world, not as friends, not as outright enemies, but maybee as a country they dosent want to visit, to trade with, to be friends with anymore..

And if this Administration REALLY ARE USING NUCLEAR WEAPON.... Then the whole world are going to react.. Then US have _no right_ to use nuclear weapon.. Specially against a nation who havent been to war with USA the last 231 year.. But have been attaced many times, from the great powers.. Most known UK and USA.. And Russia then... but that is more than 100 year ago..

IF US are to Use nuclear weapon, my fear is that you wil be verry isolated indeed.. Maybee even the UN vil relocate, to a more friendly are of the world..

But what I really fear, is that if US are using nuclear weapon, are that other nations wil do the same - against "american interst".. What that mean I dont know.. But the first use of Nuclear weapon today, wil do more harm than good.. And if you really belived that "old europe" was angry before the Iraqi war.. Belive mee, after a nuclear strike against Iran, I fear that millions wil demostrate, both in "new europe and old europe" against the nuclear use... USE of Nuclear weapon is just not a livable option, if the Administration then is not totaly mad...
They must KNOW THAT EVEN THE TREATH OF NUCLEAR WEAPON IS SOMETING THE REST OF THE WORLD WIL RESIST, EVEN THAT IT MEAN SOME UGLY THING...

time for Iran to come to grips with the fact that the US is in the hands of crazy fuckers and to stop this stupid shit of provoking them. I mean how big a problem is it to delay some program until the nutcases leave the Whitehouse?

The conventional street wisdom is "Don't fuck with the crazy guy".

Edited on Tue Oct-30-07 03:01 PM by windoe
I cannot for one second believe that 52% of Americans want another war--hello!! As the Patriot Act was passed, 'a majority of Americans polled would gladly give up civil rights for security' ----Remember that??? Gods help us, I am praying for PEACE. Please let us all wake up and prevent WWIII !!
What REALLY pisses me off is that these 'polls' are used to fake American consent to what is apparently a done deal. They are trying to make it look like they are following the wishes of the People, when it is the other way around. Curses!!!

Edited on Tue Oct-30-07 02:57 PM by saddlesore
Likely voters...this is a loaded poll.

The target sample is <1028> interviews with approximately <59> questions asked. Samples are randomly drawn from telephone cds of national listed sample. Zogby International surveys employ sampling strategies in which selection probabilities are proportional to population size within area codes and exchanges.

http://www.zogby.com/methodology/readmeth.dbm?ID=1226

1028 people polled and that means a majority of Americans - ALL 290,000,000 - want war with Iran...right...

This is the kind of shit 'Dictators in Waiting' dream of...

109. I'm surprised this shocks anyone.
The capacity of America to be motivated to aggression on the mere basis of fear should never, under any circumstances, be underestimated. The fact that this continues to apparently defy logic and boggle some as a result is only because people are still in denial about how fear plays upon a human's tendency to be illogical. Human beings seem to react first and think it through later. It just seems to be how we're all wired.

129. "There is something about our culture that has primed us for this takeover" ...
That something is we are comfortably distracted by our consumption, which comes before everything, including being a part of an informed citizenry. What would the majority rather watch, American Idol, MTV, CSI, NASCAR, the NFL, fill in the blank; or PBS? How many magazine and newspaper articles does the average American read in a week, and, How many music videos and cell phone calls does it take to exceed the time it took to read those articles?

There is a lot of distraction and people are addicted to 'feel good' right now entertainment. Gratification before responsibility. Our consumption feeds our distraction. But not all is lost! The next entertainment might be another invasion, whoopee, and the masses can learn geography when they are shown the location of the 'evil doers' country.

If this poll is anywhere near accurate, then John Q Citizen is pathetic, and may the citizens receive the just deserts of their waring Karma.

I wonder the results of a poll asking if the MAD policy of the Cold War, might be a better alternative.

Pakistan is not known for their stability, but seem to control their urges knowing certain retaliation will repay nuclear aggression. It is a country filled with Islamic fundamentalists, that has backed through the ISI, the fundamentalist Taliban in neighboring Afghanistan.

If this poll is accurate, the mass media had better present some alternative discussion of remedies. A nuclear Iran can be deterred just as a nuclear Korea, they just can not be invaded as easily when we fancy.

Yes, I consider the USA's whorish Corporate Media as nothing less than TRAITORS to our beloved Constitution.

I wish that I could come up with a more derogatory word than whores? Perhaps ghouls? They are pure evil and will help foment a bombing of Iran which will, no doubt, OPEN UP THE GATES OF HELL. :nuke:

No, I don't blame the average hard working American for one moment. People are struggling with 2, 3 or more jobs just to make ends meet. I blame both The GUTLESS and MORALLY BANKRUPT POLITICIANS and their cheerleaders in the Corporate M$M. They are f**king corrupt beyond any semblance of fair play and moral treatment of "The People." They betray The American People. If there is a just God, the leaders of these bloated corporations and paid-off complicit politicians will burn in The Seventh Ring of Hell for All Eternity.

128. Not really a representative question
Apparently the question was:

"Based on what you know about Iran's development of a nuclear program, how supportive are you of a U.S. military strike to prevent iran from developing a nuclear weapon?"

How many would answer yes if the question was phrased
"Based on the what you know about the lack of evidence that iran has any nuclear weapons program at all, how supportive are you of a U.S. military strike which, according to the Bush propaganda apparatus, would be aimed at preventing iran from developing a nuclear weapon (although many others believe it would be aimed at keeping oil transactions in dollars)?"

Since also, as noted in my previous post and documented here: http://www.pollingreport.com/iran.htm, other polls show Amevicans quite strongly OPPOSED to any attack on iran (and particularly opposed to an attack BY BUSH), I would say the combination of a conservative sample and a manipulative question make this result, to use a technical term, bullshit.

note: to get info (from Zogby) about questions and sample demographics, go to http://www.zogby.com/news/ReadNews.dbm?ID=1379 and click on link at the bottom of the page, where it says: " Topline data is available here. "

I think a lot of people are in collective denial about our weak position to to ANYTHING diplomatic or militarily against Iran. I wouldn't call it at 50 percent though. However -- maybe we all need to conclude sometimes the Internet is a self-reinforcing bubble and we are pretty out of touch with how the average person thinks. Or the poll is rigged. Or a little of both.

Yeah, I need to move (Texas) And yeah...we are screwed...
