Sharpton chides Cheney over Confederate flag flap
Edited on Tue Oct-30-07 12:53 AM by RamboLiberal
Source: NY Daily News

Nobody got shot, but Vice President Cheney still fired up controversy Monday when he went hunting at a private club that hangs the Confederate flag.

A Daily News photographer captured the 3-by-5 foot Dixie flag affixed to a door in the garage of the Clove Valley Gun and Rod Club in upstate Union Vale, N.Y.

"It's appalling for the VP to be at a private club displaying the flag of lynching, hate and murder," said the Rev. Al Sharpton. "It's the epitome of an insult."

Sharpton demanded Cheney distance himself from the exclusive club where the Stars and Bars was flown, and said he might hold a prayer vigil there.

-----

Still, some Dutchess County residents blasted the vice president for taking part in what they called a canned hunt.

Farm-bred pheasants were released on the preserve 24 hours before Cheney arrived, making them easy targets for the hunting party.

EXCLUSIVE: The Confederate flag hangs inside a garage at the Clove Valley Rod and Gun Club.

IMHO Sharpton is overreacting on this one - some fool groundskeeper/handyman type employee probably hung this flag. Be a different story if it was displayed in the lodge or flown from a flagpole.

But I am outraged as usual that this faux hunter Cheney once again participates in a canned hunt. He's not a real hunter or sportsman!

4. I am happy to report ....

THIS New Yorker, who lived in SO CAL and is now in the NW, rarely sees such flags ...

And only on the trucks of White Trash losers who are too ignorant to recognize the folly .....

I would expect the Upstate NY area to have little love for that emblem ..... no matter what political bent ....

7. There used to be an overly-large Stars & Bars flown in Los Angeles. . .
at the base of the Grapevine, the main North-South entry to the L.A. Basin. It was the first thing you saw as you came over the hill from Central California. Hung there for years back in the '70s, early '80s, high above a gas station, then one day it wasn't there. No idea what the story was, who hung it or for what, or how or why it was removed. It just seemed so incongruous, here in The Southland of California.

3. The Confederate flag in New York?
The old "Southern heritage" argument won't be operable here.

8. Only Confederate flag I ever saw while growing up
in the Los Angeles area was one on a bumper sticker on the car driven by George "Macaca" Allen in high school. He was well-known for his bigotry even then.

I still live in the LA area and only very rarely do I see some yahoo with a Confederate flag in the back window of a truck. They're out there, but few and far between, and to me it says "I'm a racist moron."

9. An acquaintance of mine participates in these "canned hunts"....
the birds are swung in the air like helicopter rotors prior to their "release" to make them disoriented. They stay that way for quite a while, until the dogs come after them anyway, and flush them from the spot they were placed. Then they feebly try to fly away, but lo and behold, there's a "hunter" right there to blow them away before they can get their wings coordinated enough to escape.

Great "hunters" these guys are. Real men. :sarcasm: Killing things is entertainment for them, be it birds, deer, bear, humans etc. It doesn't matter, just as long as their blood lust is satisfied. :grr:

In addition, hatchery-raised salmon were released into several barrels.

12. It's all just a misreading on DICK's part. He was at the wrong place all along.
Their brochure said it was a pheasant hunt. DICK misread it as "peasant."

13. if cheney had served his country in uniform he might have
learned how to aim...of course we never needed to defend our country against wingless pigeons, so I can understand why he dodged and dodged again.

14. Dick don't care . . .
But I'll happily watch Sharpton give him a raft of grief for this. If Cheney responds, you know it got under his famously thin skin. I like the Daily News take: "some . . . residents . . . what they called a canned hunt." As if there's some dispute on the point.
