Poll shows global opposition to Iran - and U.S
Source: Reuters

BRUSSELS (Reuters) - Iran is the country most people around the world would like see having less power, followed closely by the United States, a new opinion poll showed on Wednesday.

The survey, which polled 57,000 people from 52 countries, showed 39 percent of respondents wanted to see the influence of Iran diminished, compared with 37 percent for the United States.

Only 14 percent of people taking part in the poll wanted Iran to have more power while 26 percent thought more U.S. influence would make the world a better place.

The poll, commissioned by the European Council on Foreign Relations (ECFR), a new think tank on EU affairs, found more people wanted Russia and China to have less power than hoped they would gain influence.

1. Dunno about Iran, but the US' situation may change in a year.
But the fact the world is saying Iran should have less power -- maybe, just frickin' maybe, the President, and numerous candidates on EITHER side of the fence, have a genuine point??

2. Maybe the opinion about the US will change
But more than likely it won't be that quickly.

We've shown that we can act irrationally, that we can elect a dangerous leader. Twice. That the laws we're supposed to be governed by can be bent, twisted and even broken by our leaders. That we're capable of using military force on other nations without providing justification, or even with fabricated justification.

I don't think the rest of the world is going to just get over that when we have a new president.

4. It won't... issues with the US go far beyond Bush...
Bush just made the problem worse. But for a huge chunk of the world, the US has always been a imperial power that looks out after their own benefit without caring about the rest of the world. This was the case with Clinton also, again, Bush just made it worse.

6. Huh? Seems like the world is saying, 37 to 26, DON'T let the US take action
against Iran.

Just because they don't trust Iran, doesn't mean they want drunken cowboy criminal nutjobs in the US to deal with the situation.

Perhaps an illustration helps: I am quite annoyed by people who drive around with their radios blaring. In a sense, I feel they have 'too much power'. But I don't want the mayor to hire Blackwater to come shoot rocket propelled grenades at all loud cars. because Blackwater already 'has too much power' and I certainly don't want to see them having more power. Also, I think the loud radio problem could either be a) tolerated to some extent or b) dealt with by less extreme measures.

Sounds like you think anyone who opposes Cheney's excellent adventure in Iran must not realize that Iran is dangerous. This is fallacious. I, for one, think the current fundamentalist power structure in Iran is quite dangerous. But I think unleashing the Cheney fanatical war machine is vastly MORE dangerous, and I think the rest of the world (Russia, China, France being important examples) are quite up to dealing with the problem in a manner that is both a) effective and b) doesn't lead directly to WWIII.

Just my opinion, though.
