All in the family: Cheney and Obama are related

But could it be possible that Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama and Vice President Dick Cheney share a common ancestor?

Cheney's wife Lynne says yes.

In an interview on MSNBC Tuesday afternoon, Mrs. Cheney said that in the course of researching her husband's genealogy for her new book, "Blue Skies, No Fences," she discovered that the two public figures share an ancestor eight generations ago.

"Think about this," Mrs. Cheney said. "This is such an amazing American story that one ancestor, a man that came to Maryland, could be responsible down the family line for lives that have taken such different and varied paths as Dick's and Barack Obama's."

come from their closest common ancestor. Chances are great that their respective 0.39% have no overlap, in other words, Obama and Cheney may have exactly 0% of nucleotides in common. That makes them totally unrelated at the molecular level.

His mother's family was from Kansas, and of fairly humble origins. There was no "elite" involved on the American side.

I'm hardly elite, but you wouldn't believe me if I told you who I'm related to. If you can get as far as six to eight generations back, half the known nobles and scoundrels of modern history are your verifiable distant cousins.

It sure would be an awkward family reunion. But, believe it or not, Barack Obama is related to both President Bush and Vice President Dick Cheney.

OK, distantly related: Obama and Bush are 11th cousins.

That's because they share the same great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great grandparents -- Samuel Hinckley and Sarah Soole Hinckley of 17th century Massachusetts.

Obama is related to Cheney through Mareen Duvall, a 17th century immigrant from France.

Mareen and Susannah Duvall were Obama's great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great grandparents and Cheney's great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great grandparents.
