Bus in deadly collision with train in Cuba, state TV reports
Source: CNN.com

HAVANA, Cuba (AP) -- A bus collided with a train in eastern Cuba, killing at least 28 people and injuring another 73, including 15 in critical condition, state media reported Sunday.

<snip>

Cuba's State media, which typically shy away from reporting extensively about any kind of bloodshed, provided only sketchy details and not even Granma Province's digital newspaper, La Demajagua, carried news of the accident.

The Communist Youth newspaper Juventud Rebelde had only a short story Sunday reporting that the collision took place at a railroad crossing near a bridge in the small town of Veguita, in Yara municipality.

Buses are scarce and often overloaded with passengers in rural Cuba, where large trucks are also often commonly used as public transportation. In June a truck transporting passengers in the same region flipped over, killing 11.

1. Very tragic for the Cuban people.
Hopefully the free press will somehow be able to ferret out the details.

28 dead in Cuba as train slams into bus

HAVANA (AFP) — At least 28 people were killed and 73 injured in Cuba's deadliest accident in years Saturday after a train slammed into a bus, state television reported.

"In this fatal accident, as of 6:00 pm (2200 GMT) 28 people have been killed and another 73 remain in hospital, 15 of whom are in serious condition," the state news report said of the accident in the southeast of the Caribbean nation.

The train had left Cuba's second city, Santiago, headed for Manzanillo, in Granma province. It slammed into the bus at a crossing in Yara, about 800 kilometers (500 miles) southeast of Havana, the report said.

Officials rushed to the scene and other people came to help the injured and give blood, the report added. Police were investigating the cause of the crash, which authorities said was Cuba's deadliest accident in years.

Last June, 11 people were killed and 50 were injured when a truck flipped over in the Santiago area.

3. "Cuba's State media, which typically shy away from reporting extensively about any... ... bloodshed"
OK. Yeah right.

That statement means that Cuba's media doesn't go apeshit 24/7 over gruesome stories like the US infotainment "news" channels do.
And just because "Communist Youth newspaper Juventud Rebelde had only a short story Sunday reporting that the collision took place" doesn't mean that the story wasn't covered by the many local/regional Cuban media extensively.

Even when a disaster strikes in Cuba, the AP has to spin it with some anti Cuba mewling.

4. It was a serious and tragic incident.
And should have been covered in a substantive way by the major Cuban media, unless, of course, they are either 1. censored/controlled by the govt., or 2, there was more pressing national news that day.

So, which of the two was it?

5. You missed a choice...
3, it was covered by Cuban media.

Just because AP reports that Juventud Rebelde had only a short story doesn't mean that it wasn't fully covered by other media in Cuba.
