Bulk of US anti-terror grants go to Jewish organizations
Source: Associated Press

Homeland Security Department hands out $24 million in grants to Jewish nonprofit organizations in major US cities

<snip>

"More than $24 million went out Friday to mostly Jewish nonprofit organizations in major cities across the country, because the federal government considers them to be at high risk of terror attacks.

The Homeland Security Department decided which nonprofits would receive the 308 grants based on threat and risk information. Organizations in Chicago and New York were the top recipients.

The funds are to be used to increase security and screening systems and to train personnel in terror awareness and preparedness. The grants went to medical centers, schools, temples and synagogues. One went to an Islamic organization in Miami.

That Jewish organizations received the bulk of the funding does not mean there are new or heightened threats against Jewish Americans, the department said."

5. Excuse me?
What a bizarre remark. How many "Palestinian Americans" are there, anyway? How many have been attacked by "Israeli sympathizers"?

Mosques worshipped in by all kinds of Muslims have been vandalized by Americans because of 9/11. Not many, but some. And they should be protected, as well. But you don't even consider them. Israel, however, has nothing to do with that animosity. Unless, of course, you're one of the geniuses who believe Israel did it and blamed the poor, dumb Arabs who could never have been clever enough to steal four jets?

But it's good to know that you don't believe that anything Jewish should be kept safe from harm.

10. It seems to me that Israelies and U.S. Israeli sympathizers have Palestinian blood on their hands or
have they done no wrong and nothing that they can be criticized for? All I'm saying is that Palestinians need protection as well...

15. The week after 9/11, synagogues in Seattle had volunteers provide security for mosques.

20. You think that 'medical centers, schools, temples and synagogues' have blood on their hands?
They aren't attacking Palestinians! This money is not going to the American or Israeli or any other government or military office! You seem to be showing some sort of kneejerk response here. Is a synagogue or a Jewish medical center to blame for attacks on Palestinians????

If there are Palestinian organizations in America that are being threatened, then they should receive similar funding.

21. It's a pity that the funding is even necessary; but good that people are getting it
I am sure that both Jewish and Muslim organizations need it at the moment. As pointed out on the thread, sadly clinics that provide abortions or other controversial services may also need it.

6. Could you translate that into English?
Are you, perhaps, trying to say that American Jews are terrorists? If you are, please state it with clarity.

3. ....
The Miami-based American Muslims for Emergency and Relief also received a grant this year. Director Sofian Abdelaziz Zazakkout said Islamic centers across the country are vandalized, and his organization is also vulnerable.

7. Which is why the grant is both necessary and reasonable.
Don't you think?

9. The non-profits should be protecting themselves with their own money
Not the govt's job to protect them.

17. This isn't about protestors. It is about protecting property.
Police don't exactly protect demonstrators.

As for protecting property it is the responsibility of property owners to provide security as needed with their own funds. NOT to give them money. Governments don't give money to grocery stores, banks, fast food restaurants so they can provide security. That is the business owner to include that in their operation. I don't see local government paying business operations to install security cameras, alarm systems, etc to protect them. So why should non-profits be and it isn't even all of them but just those of a specific faith.

18. No, it is about protecting people.
Part of the reason I left Seattle was that the Jewish Community Center got shot up and acquaintences of mine died. My rabbi was getting death threats. My synagogue's email was getting nasty spam. Don't try to say this is all victimless property damage.

19. Sure they do!
I've seen police from Florida to San Francisco protecting demonstrators from counterdemonstrators and vice versa, using their bodies to get between two mutually hostile groups of civilians. It doesn't ALWAYS happen, but it DOES happen, just like police violence against demonstrators doesn't ALWAYS happen, but DOES happen.

11. They think Nazis and Skinhead are gonna attack Jewish groups? Maybe
Edited on Sat Sep-29-07 02:50 PM by McCamy Taylor
The majority of terra-ist activity in the US that is actually well planned and coordinated is done by right wing fundie Christian types (even if the FBI and the corporate press will not cover it) and those guys are all Nazis at heart and they hate Jewish people, so yeah, maybe it makes sense to offer special protection to Jewish groups. But I would hand out some money to abortion providers and gays as well, just in case.

12. If the headline were honest (LOL @ honest headlines), it would read
Edited on Sat Sep-29-07 03:13 PM by Vidar
"AIPAC sanctioned organizations" rather than "Jewish organizations". "Jewish organizations" smacks of anti-Semitism, as there are many very worthy, uncorrupted Jewish organizations. AIPAC, however, seems to be the Israeli version of the PNAC or DLC, an organization corrupt & malicious in most or all of its dealings.

13. Your reply makes no sense.
It was very clear in the article that the organizations are non-profits, so why the jump to AIPAC, the "leftist" boogeyman?

...Jews make the largest percentage of hate crimes victims based on religious beliefs. This article doesn't surprise me, nor do some the reactions.
